We recently bought a new front door, made of fiberglass. It has a
leaded glass window in it. Stupid me, I assumed that the frame around
the glass would also be fiberglass, but it's not - it's plastic. Too
late to do anything about it now, I have an $800 door with a plastic
window frame.

When talking to the salesman at the millwork place where we bought the
door, he told me that all but the highest-end doors have plastic
frames and that I should just stain the frame along with the
fiberglass. Well, uh, okay... but...

I've stained the door and that went fine. Now, however, I have to
figure out a way to paint/stain/something the plastic frame because
the stain sure as heck doesn't stick to the plastic (no big surprise
there). When I called the salesman again, he suggested using "alkyd"
paint. From doing the Google thing, I see that this is just another
way of referring to oil-base paint with a certain kind of binder. Is
that really going to work? Is the "alkyd" binder thing going to make
a difference? After the fiasco with trying to stain the plastic (the
way I was told to do, argh) I want to get it right this time.

The frame can't be removed due to the construction of the door, so I'm
hesitant to use spraypaint (like the new Krylon Fusion made
specifically for plastic) because I'm afraid the paint would get
everywhere.

Could anyone give me some advice getting this plastic stuff painted?

Thank you.

Any of the commercially availible spray paints should do well on your
plastic. Just mask a couple of feet on each side and spray the paint when
the wind is calm. It isn't a big deal.

If you're not comfortable with that, you could always purchase paint at a
hobby shop which would be very happy to stick to plastic.
