Hello. new to the this newsgroup, as I'm new to home ownership.

I close on August 8th, and decided to move in on the 16th. This will
give me some time to paint and fix up some things.

But I need HELP! You interior decorating people out there, what would
you do with this?

http://www.areddy.net/house

Looking to just lay down some paint for now. Later mods may including
ceramic tiling kitchen counter, hardwood floor in kitchen.

Thanks for your help!

Check your library or Home repair shop-there are several very good books on
paint techniques-really snazzy ideas that go beyond ragging & sponging.
Good luck,

Larry,

Your hardware store may have idea books as give-aways in the paint
section. Lowes and HD do have these. There are plenty of books on interior
decorating at your library and also in bookstores.
Looking at this floor plan I think complementary colors using a different
color on each of the exterior walls might work well. Use one color for trim
throughout the first floor to tie everything together. For the half height
walls of the kitchen continue to use whatever color is on the exterior wall.
I'd consider doing the stairs and the walls of the outside of the
bath/laundry with some fancy technique like ragging, stippling or
leather-look but they'll look ok off-white so you can put this off for a
while if you want.
I'm in the middle of redoing my bedrooms now and did the kitchen over
last year. I did everything off-white when I first moved in and find that
the different colors and techniques I'm using this time is a much nicer
result.

Good luck,
Dave M.

I just can't understand why homebuilders paint everything in a modern
house either off-white or beige. I mean, name one person whose
favorite color is "beige"!

My suggestion would be to paint each area a different color, and leave
trim/doors white. I'm not talking about painting the walls dark red
or something really drastic, but a very light color (like a pale
yellow or a sky blue) will improve things in a subtle way.

As for the ceilings, popcorn ceilings are common in new construction
because it's darn near impossible to hide the seams in a drywalled
ceiling. So, they just texture the ceilings to take care of the
problem. They're probably white, so I'd say leave them as-is (but
give 'em a coat of paint if they need it).
