I had my bedroom and bathroom painted, but not the ceiling.
The painter got some wall paint on the ceiling. He says that when he
cleaned it off, the ceiling was conspicuously different because he cleaned
dirt off the ceiling also. He says the only fix is to repaint the ceiling
because there is no way he can match the dirt. It is pretty conspicuously
different now; right over the doorway.

He might be right about the dirt; I have not had it painted (or cleaned) in
the 10 years I have lived here; but it doesn't seem right that I should have
to work I didn't want.

I imagine this sort of thing comes up all the time. Is there a standard? I
thought of offering to pay for the paint if he does the work, but I didn't
get any sense he was open to compromise. (yeah, I know, deduct the cost
from the final payment, but I am not into that sort of thing.)

The guy is not a painter, he's a  "dauber". If he was a painter, he A: wouldn't have gotten paint on the ceiling in the first place and B: a "real" painter could match your ceiling, dirt and all. I'm a retired journeyman and jerks like him irritate the hell out of me.

"I have a paint brush, I'm a painter." "I have a hammer, I'm a carpenter."  Ect....

If it's been 10 years then why paint the walls and not the ceiling? It's
sorta like washing 1/2 the car!!!
