Protecting faux finish in kitchen

Hello All,

I have been researching ways of redoing my kitchen. My question regards
protecting faux finishes on
kitchen cabinets. I like the look of crackle and thought of using this
technique on my kitchen cabinets.
When I spoke with a faux finish 'expert' at the local home improvement
store, he mentioned that you
could protect the finish with a coat or two of polyurethane. A friend
seemed apprehensive about putting
polyurethane over paint. Is this reasonable? Or is there an additional way
to protect these finishes for
high traffic areas?

You can cover the faux finish with Flecto Diamond Elite water-based poly. It
goes on milky but dries crystal clear and will protect your finish. I would
recommend two coats. Comes in satin, semi and high gloss. We use it all the
time over our faux finishes. My wife just finished painting two pillars in the
master bedroom, marbelized them and covered with Diamond Elite Satin. Looks
great. This finish will not change the colours underneath that you have put on.

Head to your local paint store, not Sherwin, but a local
place, and ask them for an acrylic varnish. You'll need
several coats, and a coat or two every few years, but the
acrylics won't yellow like urethane varnishes will.
