I have light grey walls in my bedroom and would like to faux paint a
mauve over it. Everything I read says to have the lighter paint on
top. Can I do it reversed? Should I just be brave and do it?

Go for it - you can do it in reverse. If you don't like it - paint over it.

Absolutely! There are no rules in faux painting. I took a course in the
various techniques, and have done much in my own home. If you want a
lighter look, then light on dark. A more dramatic feel is obtained by
the dark on light. A great look can be achieved by lightly sponging a
third color, perhaps silver, before the mauve is applied. The best
results come from "playing" -- being relaxed and having fun. Practice on
newspapers to get yourself ready . . . and enjoy!

Yes I have done this myself, but there is one rule make sure that your
base coat is not a flat paint. You will get a better result if you use a
satin finish. If you don't like a satin finish you can use an eggshell
finish. But I think that a satin finish will give you better results.
