decorative paint on steel door

I intend to do some decorative painting on a new steel door. I have checked
on 'dejanews' and obtained some good advice on preparation and type of paint
to use. When I do decorative painting on furniture, I generally use
regular latex house paints, and put a few coats of water-based varathane
over top, to protect it. But that's on wooden furniture that stays indoors.
Does a decorative paint job, using exterior acrylic latex paints on a metal
door, require varathane protection? Thanks in advance for the advice...

I hope the door is well protected. Depends on the coverage of the base
coat and the type of decorative finish. If it will be rubbed off easily,
then yes, a protective coat will help. Just make sure you use a clear
acrylic rated for exterior use. I believe Varathane makes one.

The door I intend to do the decorative paint job on is south facing,
sheltered from the wind and most of the rain, but gets full sun.

Yes, you still want to put some protection on your decorations. I have used
Flecto Diamond Outdoor Elite on several projects, including tole painted metal
mail boxes with good success. Instruction booklet that I got from a Flecto rep
says that once the gloss level starts to go or loose it's sheen, very lightly
sand and apply two more coats directly over top. Worked great for me.
