Landscaping Fabric

Last year I used some landscape fabric (the plastic kind with a bunch of
tiny holes in it) under some "River Jack" stone around our pool. Some weeds
(wild onions) decided they can grow thru this stuff. I noticed there is
another type of fabric(spun fiber ?) available. Is this stuff any better? Or
is there another better method in general. I'm really not concerned about
water getting thru the fabric, but I've heard not to use solid plastic.

We used the woven stuff and put mulch on top. We still had some plants
growing up through the fabric. The only time I've had NOTHING grow through
was when I used black plastic. Poke a few holes in it and you're good to
go.

There are different grades of geotextile fabrics...the grade found at
homeowner supply stores is usually inferiour to what you can order from
a landscape supply outfit...talk to local contractors. Also, some
perennial weeds (not sure about wild onions) are persistent enough to
eventually work through any fabric and should first be treated with an
appropriate herbicide. Good luck.
