We moved into our house August 1, 2001. The house had sat empty for about 3
years. I cleaned everything very well before moving in but didn't think
about the water pipes. We have a beautiful antique 7 foot claw foot bath
tud with a shower encloser. For a house warming gift a friend gave us
beautiful white cloth shower curtains for it. The fabric turned a orange
color around the bottom of the curtains. I assumed it was rust so I soaked
them in a solution of iron out and warm water (mixed according to the
directions) over night. The color appeared to fade somewhat but it is still
there. Any ideas of how I can turn the curtains back to a nice white color?
Please help!

It sounds more like a mildue/fungus to me. I've seen it in lots of
homes. You ever see a ring of orange in a toilet..at about water
level? How about in a pet's water dish, or around the edges of a tub
shelf?

I'd wash the curtain with some bleach if its bleach-able. If not you
could try a color safe bleach. Be sure to use hot water.

I agree with Mel. I see it everywhere. Another thing that helps is if you
let the curtain air dry after you shower. Pull it over the edge of the tub
and let it hang free. Not soggily stuck to the inside of the tub.

Okay....so it wasn't a rust stain! I put a cup and a half of bleach in 2
gallons of very hot water and the stains disappeared right away! The
curtains look brand new. I'll run them through the washer and they will
look wonderful! Thanks for the tip!

Great!! I throw my shower curtains and liners in the washer along
with a bath towel or 2. Add the bleach to the hot soapy water and
wash. Then throw it all in the dryer as well..
