I cannot get the _Cox_version_ of the URC-8820 Remote (made by UEI) to
program.

Cox "Support" is inhabited by slugs, and any question to UEI gets
kicked back to "ask Cox" :-(

(The Cox "documentation" is limited to device on/off numbers.)

What I'd like to do is program "Power" to power-up Cable-TV-AUX...
skip powering up the DVD. (Otherwise the TV thinks I want DVD and NOT
cable, since the STB doesn't support CEC.)

Anyone know of the "secrets" to programming this device? (It doesn't
respond to the codes for the "standard" URC8820.)

Thanks!

Hi,

Look in the battery compartment for six (6) holes.

If you see them, then visit:

How about pins (a six-pin header, two lines of three pins)?

That works too.

I haven't opened it up. But there is a "peculiar" depression there at
the end of the battery compartment, just about right for a 2x3 header.

Anyone know how to non-destructively open these dudes up?

Wheeee! While looking around the edge for the "starter pry gap" I
came across a 5-inline-pin female, 100mil on-centers, on the bottom
end of the remote.

JP1 compatible?

Hi,

sorry, I have four old identical remotes and am not keeping up with JP1 and
the newer capabilities.

Vaguely I wonder if it is a serial connection, the six pin was a great hack
but doing the upgrades over serial I have heard about perhaps.

If you are a programmer check the JP1 files for information about your
remote. You do not have to program at the machine code level (Which I can
with my remotes), but being a programmer helps.

The connector would be in the battery box. No surgery is required beyond
removing the battery cover. So if you don't see it when you do that,
it's not there.

I don't know what the 5-pin header is - that's new to me.

Hi,

Do not give up too soon, five (5) is a odd number so six spring loaded pogo
sticks probes would be easier to hold steady.

An external five (5) pin jack might be the remote builder's better solution
to do the same external programming of the flash memory.

It has been many years since I looked at the interfaces you could build, The
USB assembled cable looked to me as a better long term solution.

In any case, the JP1 forum has lots of information on remote codes,
protocols and how a RCA TV was not affected by a Sony remote control.

One company building most all of the remotes really helped to prevent a
horrible mess.

[snip]

As near as I can tell, the JP1 hack only has 5 _active_ pins.
