Where do you keep *your* bees?

They're back.... too early!
|
| |
"My" bees have returned, thanks to the unseasonably warm weather, so in an effort to keep them going until the plant life catches up, I am once again offering them a daily tray of bee tea, - like hummingbird nectar, but much stronger. They really appreciate it, since the only things currently in bloom here are the crocus and pussy-willows!... more »

Warning! Always wear ANSI approved safety goggles when reading posts by Checkmate. Oh, yeah... I should also mention that Laurie said the following:
...
Did you just say you had BEES involved in researching and experiencing alternative diets? How's that working out for you?
...
I hope Chuck got a fine for littering and disturbing the peace.... more »

Big a$$ scary insect
|

I have posted this in Dave's Garden bug ID forum as well, but figured maybe someone here might recognize this formidable critter. I am in the Catskills, and have been feeding both the hummingbirds and more recently a small swarm of honey bees. This year the yellow jackets and bumbles joined in at the buffet, and as if they know I am helping... more »

They're back ;-)
|
| |
I wrote last fall about a swarm of bees who seemed to need help ('Odd bee situation' and Further follow up - happy bees! last October). Bees swarming for water
|

The ones on the stock tank were falling in so I added enough water to make it easier for them to drink. I saved a lot from drowning. There's some tough woody weeds in the yard the bees like to... more »

I have read a few posts on a forum of people who use plywood for hives/supers. Up here in my area we have CDX plywood. I have been considering using it (I could make 5 3/4 deeps from one $25 sheet). My only concern is the out-gassing of the glues. I know exterior glue releases it's gas much slower and is considered to be much less a problem. The hardware... more »

Treating Varroa
|
| |
I have been (as I said) working on ideas to treat varroa. I know what I am posting is not ground breaking ideas but wanted feedback on what the draw backs would be. Bee lifespan: Queen = 16 days to emerging. Worker = 21 days to emerging. Drone = 24 days to emerging. So as is known 24 days is the longest to expect between emergences.... more »
