Ticks on bumble bees

A large bumble settled on the door yesterday, so I had a close look and
it seemed like it had a row of four (quite fat) little ticks around one
side of its neck, I tried to knock them off using the end of a peg but
the bee would not stay still.

Were they ticks? or some kind of mite or what? did I see right?
Is there any powder that will kill the ticks/mites but not the bees so I
can dust any that I see?
any references to images of bee pests would be appreciated if anyone has
any.... thanks... (wish I had gone for the camera rather than the peg so
I could show you what these things looked like...)
