Not a real person. Just a character made up by Cameron and the
script writers for his movie. Ditto Rose, her mum, her fiancée,
his manservant/thug, Jack's Italian friend.

Here's the problem - and I call it the "Fox News Effect" just because that network has actually had a profound effect on history itself the past 14 years:

People go to see a movie and are so drawn into it they think what happened in it it happened in reality! Especially in films based on historic events.

Even today a sizeable majority of people still believe the same things they did as when they happened:

That Jack and Rose were really Titanic passengers.
That Iraq was responsible for carrying out the 9/11 attacks.
That Oswald acted alone in Dealy Plaza during the JFK motorcade.

Folks are simply going to take things at face value without looking into it further. And it affects the way they think, the way the vote, and ultimately, our budgets and the trajectory of our history!

BTW there was a "J. Dawson" on Titanic - just not the one portrayed: http://www.fanpop.com/spots/titanic/answers/show/54824/people-jack-roses-story-actually-true He was an engineroom personnel.

What's more the body of Joseph Dawson was recovered and buried in
Fairview Cemetery, Halifax under a plain headstone inscribed "J.
Dawson". After the movie came out the grave was discovered and became
an object of pilgrimage for hundreds of weeping teenage girls who
thought it marked the last resting place of Leonardo DiCaprio.

Of interest to you, however, is that J. Dawson's grave stays buried in flowers, letters, etc. One of Titanic's "firemen" (stokes the coal in the engine rooms) was named John Dawson. (Guys named John were typically nicknamed "Jack"). His body was recovered and buried at Halifax Cemetery in the Titanic section, marked as "J. Dawson". Little teeny bopper girls (and a few foolish adults) who do not realize that the movie character was fictional have given his resting place nearly shrine status.
