For Want of a Nail, often touted as the most comprehensive, if not
plausible, alternate history in time, was noteworthy for coming up
with the idea of Kramer Associates- the Zaibatsu that became a global
power.

In the future, what kind of similar non-national entities could wield
similar economic, military, and political powers? Multinational
corporations are one. I don't think religious groups can- theocracies
are nations, too. And I doubt that terrorist organizations will ever
become countries.
