YES! I've already said once, go to a large library, track down the VCH
for your county (Yorks), and you should find several pages for yor
parish(es). The VCH are extensive and normally go back as far as
recorded history does for each area. I've found the LAncs editions very
useful in researching 17th century LAncashire. I suspect municipal
libraries for any large town (Hull, York or Leeds might be your best
bet, but I don't know East Yorks that well) would have copies.
Certainly Manchester's Central Ref Library has the Lancashire editions.
University libraries would also be likely to have them, or at least the
older universities. MAnchester has the entire set, for every county.
Cheers, Alex
I understand how you might make that mistake. But you are wrong. The
Christian congregation to which I belong is just about half white and half
black in its membership, but we are one church, one body in Christ. We have
close fellowship without regard to race. We eat with each other. We greet
each other with a holy kiss. And we wash each other's feet. God has called
us together to be one new people in Him. Here are two passages from
Christian scripture that you should read:
"You are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you
were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is
neither Jew nor Greek (non-Jew), slave nor free, male nor female, you are
all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's
seed and heirs according to the promise." GALATIANS 3:26-29
"After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one
could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language standing before
the throne (of God) and in front of the Lamb (Christ)." A discription of the
heavenly congregation at worship from REVELATION 7:9.
Sorry. No racism here.

A superficial reading of history that overlooks the Quakers, the
Arabic Christian Churches, the Ethiopian Churches, etc., will come to
that conclusion. My local congregation has some nineteen different
ethnic groups including Egyption, Ethiopian, Lebanese, Russian,
Romanian, Serbian, and Bulgarian.

Read Dietrich Bonhoeffer's biography and any decent history of the
time. The Christian Churches of Germany were simply a pawn in the hand
of Adolf Hitler who made no bones about the fact that after the
"Jewish" problem was handled, that the Christians would be next in
line.

> American slavery was "justified" by "Christians".
Just as it was condemned by Christians. Read the history of the Quaker
and Anabaptist movements.
It would be far more correct to say: "some people who claimed to be
Christians rationalized the practice through 'proof-texting' and
personal interpretations of the Christian Holy Scriptures."
It is also notable that a good number of the founding fathers of the
US that supported slavery (such as Thomas Jefferson) were notable in
that they weren't Christians.

I agree. But Shiva is evil - so were the Thugees, so is Sutee..... so was
the Spanish inquisition, so are the Taliban, so were the Stern Gang, and
the Nazis and the Black and Tans..... it goes on and on and on. Isn't it
time we humans grew up, had fun, left each other in peace and got out of
this stupid, pointless mess?
