The faux history/ediucational channels are forever
producing Mockumentaries on "History's Mystories."
In reality the basis of these shows is what material
they either have on the shelf or can get for cheap
money, and NOT what is a mystery.... let alone a
good one.
Anyhow, I challenge all those people who say they
want interesting, relevant exchanges to post one
or more historic mysteries that they find intriguing.
The hope here is that others might offer ideas or
resources in your examination. As for myself...
Yes, I thought I'd get the ball rolling with a few of
the mysteries that have had me stretching my
head on occasion. This is something I've thought
about in the past -- I've even posted on a few such
mysteries (The Screaming Man/Body of Alexander
the Great) -- and now is as good a time as any
for a return to the subject.
Earlier I was checking out alt.history.ancient-egypt
and saw a crazy post on the subject of the location
of Punt, the fabled ancient kingdom the Egyptians
wrote about (and visited). Prompted by that lunatic
I will limit my mysteries to Egyptian history.
(The order does NOT reflect priority)
Amarna
#1. The identity of Smenkare.
I've always found this to be an intriguing mystery,
and not just because of the wildly different theories
circulating in the mainstream. It seems to me that
the answer -- whatever it may be -- could tell us a
great deal about Egyptian civilization, and the extent
of the social disruption which appears to have
occurred during the Amarna Period.
#2. The life & death of Nefertiti. Who was she?
Where did she come from? What power and
influence did she actually have? When and how
did she die?
#3. King Tut's tomb; was it unusual? All the artifacts
from (an)other tomb? The enormous quantities of
gold? Was it normal? Where the tombs of
predecessors routinely looted? Egyptians kings were
gods, yes, but they were all the same god. In a very
real sense, in their eyes at least, the previous kings
were them.
Other periods.
#1.
The fate of Alexander the Great's body.
#2.
The location of the land of Punt.
#3.
The origins and purpose of the proto-sinaitic language.
#4.
The identity and origins or the Sea People.
#5.
The Identity and origin or the Hyksos.
#6.
The extent of their empire, their borders -- when
and how they changed.
