Subject: Is There An FAQ?
Hello, everyone, I'm interested in fasting and just from reading over some
of your posts have already encountered some unfamiliar terms(ketosis,
psyllium husks, etc.).

My interest in fasting is primarily weight loss(not necessarily the
spiritual benefits) and would like to know things like how much weight can
one expect to realistically lose in a given period of time, how does one
resume "normal eating" post fast, and the like.

Thanking any and all in advance for their time and attention,

Adrian Burns

I've lost 110 pounds with a combination of fasting and low carb eating.
I use low carb for maintenance and/or more weight loss,  but the bulk of
my weight loss has been via fasting.  Low carb eating keeps me from
gaining weight back.  It also helps me rebuild muscle loss from fasting
and jack back up my metabolism.  It can help me continue to lose weight,
but the weight loss is typically slow, about a pound or two a week.
When you have a large amount of weight to lose, this can be
excrutiatingly slow.

I calorie cycle often.  Three days fasting, three days of all the low
carb food I can eat.  My longest fast was sixty days and I lost 65
pounds.  Typically within the first few days you will lose 5-10 pounds
of water weight.  As you burn stored glucose (sugar/fuel) you will lose
water because for every molecule of glucose your body has it stores 3-4
molecules of water.

Typically after the initial water loss I lose a pound or two a day
depending on how active I am.  When I resume eating it's right back to
low carb.  I broke my sixty day fast with a few pounds of roast beef!
Typically I eat chicken, fish or turkey and lots of veggies (broccolli,
cabbage, cauliflower, zucchini) and nuts (cashews and almonds are my
faves), with occassional berries (love strawberries and they are low in
fructose/sugar).

I don't typically have to eat anything special to break a fast, but I
have to avoid sugar entirely.

Adrian:

I have been reading a book called "Fasting: The Ultimate Diet".  It is
written by Allan Cott, M.D.  In the book I recall it being said that during
the first week of the fast one might lose up to twenty pounds...most of it
water, of course.  After that, the going rate is about a pound per day.  I'm
sure it depends on your activity level.  As far as ketosis..and the other
terms...well, find Debby Padilla's post "re: new to this" .  May help answer
your question.  Like you I am trying to fast for weight loss.  Good luck. :)
