Hi,

Why is a "QSO party" called a "QSO party"?

I have been a ham for many years. I learned early on that "QSO" is the
ham expression for "conversation". However, during a "QSO party", the only
actual QSOs (conversations) I find, if any, are hams who are not involved in
the "QSO party"!

Why can't we have a real "QSO party"? In other words, an event where
hams get involved in "conversations" for at least 15 minutes or more?

Regards, John N3AOF

Hi, John

You're on the right track allright,
but I'd say that the minimum should be 1 hour.

In fact I don't even log a "QSO" unless it's at least an hour.

Fifteen minutes is barely enough to exchange the minimum when
you're "conversing" in Morse with a new op. Now, if he's a
hi speed guy, its OK for the minimum.

But even with SSB, 15 minutes doesn't give you enough time to
really get acquainted with anyone. An hour gives you time to
learn enough about the other guy to know if you want to meet
up with him again later, or make a sked, or really develop a
friendship.

I'd love to rag chew but I have to work for a living. I don't really do
ham radio to make friends (although that happens anyway). I do it to
bounce music (digital modes)off the sky and see how far I can go on
modest equipment.

In article <ep39d5167e1ml10vh...@4ax.com>,
jaugu...@verizon.net says...

Well actually, if you find a conversation, and you actually key up, then
magically you are in a QSO. I have never heard someone say you cannot
join a QSO if you want in. I have found most complainers complain, but
do nothing to improve the situation. I have real QSO's every day, where
are you? Dan N0DND
