Most 2 meter ht's can be modified for use on the marine freqs. You want
find one that come "stock" with those freqs included, except perhaps for
receive only.

With a simple mod, many ht's can be made to transmit and receive on the
marine freqs.

I don't consider surface mount board level mods to be "simple". One slip
and you have a paper weight.

Of course simple and easy would be the best reason for outlawing ham radios
altogether. You don't mind people running out to buy ham radios to (try to)
use for commercial purposes?

I remember showing up on a 2m repeater asking for road assistance, and some
unidentified station jumped all over me for "not using proper police
procedures". It sure ain't what it used to be 25 years ago.

How can you monitor the harbor calling frequency while chatting on 2m?
answer: Have another radio to do what it was meant to do. And make sure
the mics don't get mixed up.

Incidentally, all marine frequencies are monitored by Coast Guard,
assistance contractors and even satellites for emergency traffic. If you
are on land goofing around and don't hear an emergency going on out at sea,
they can hear you. I know of someone doing 5 years in Fed pen for just such
a situation after 6 months in custody during trial preparations and 30
minutes of jury deliberations. He can never be caught in possession of a
radio ever again.

It's not quite that bad. Use MagEyes (or something similar) with lots
of light, have a fast recovery soldering station, and a steady hand and
SMT isn't so terrible.

If it were a simple mod, then it would be simple for the FCC to send the
manufacturer a Notice of Liability and confiscate all inventory or force
them to remanufacture and resubmit to the approval process like they did
with Kenwood.

Don't forget ESD and warranty. Going out and getting a service monitor so
you can check the tuning and modulation that was optimized for 144-148 at
the factory is an added expense when you could have bought a marine radio
for less. Some radios, most notably VHF models, lose performance out of
band. Do you need a marine radio? Buy a better marine radio. If you don't
need a marine radio why hack your ham radio. The price is about the same
and operationally, you can't be both places at the same time when you need
to.

I do surface mount work too but there is nothing to be gained with the mod
unless you're MARS, CAP, a jammer, or a kid with a new toy.

Then there was the other issue brought to light with a recent rail disaster,
where an engineer was fooling around texting when he should have been paying
attention to driving the train so he wouldn't have run a red light and ran
head on into another one.

Think ahead.

That is a flaw in Metrolink. Never use a human as a potentially fatal
single point of failure. I wasn't speaking in favor of the modification.
I was merely pointing out that soldering stations and stereo
magnifiers have kept me relevant.

I use a jewelers loupe, so I have to be more careful not to put the iron up

The trouble with Metrolink is that they are doing business in California, so
merit has more to do with politics than skill. You have to be incompetent
so no one will suspect you got there on your own power. This is likely to
become more nationwide. For an accurate picture, see the movie "Idiocracy"
by the guy that did "Office Space". Only the name calling is changed. We
are manure for the revolution.

There was a time when there were skilled people, and we could do great
things, but this nation has become demoralized, and is in the
destabilization phase. It might be too soon for the crisis stage though,
because the military is still viable and moral even with our new C-C. The
population of the US is very great, so it is very difficult to kill enough
of them fast enough before the idealistic idiots counter revolt when they
finally realize they are being played for their own destruction. Other
schools of thought believe demoralization is so complete that the idealist
would cling to their programming despite the reality of their own
observation, just as so many Jews in Auschwitz waited in line to be
executed.

The plan (from the 70's) is outlined here by a defector, complete with
explanation of terms. See how much of it you can recognize today:

He did Beavis and Butthead before that. His name is Mike Judge. He
used to play bass for Anson Funderberg [sic]

It's illegal to manufacture such radios so you won't find any out of the box
radios with such a dual capability.

As far as using one, it would have to be what the government classifies as a
sufficient emergency which is much more stringent than what everyday people
consider an emergency.
