snake oil salesmen --- is there a way to try before I buy? Probably not,
would be my guess, however if there was some kind of trial period, I might
give it a try.
My feeling is that, although wonderfull in theory, in practice the lag-time
would be just a bit too long for comfort. It would be more like a simplex
(one way at a time) walkie-talkie conversation with each participant talking
over the others speech --- like you see on CNN when they talk to a
correspondant over a satellite link and they think the other one is waiting
for them to talk and wind up tripping all over each other.

Not to condone NCS or anything, I know nothing about them, but VIOP has
made leaps and bounds in the last few years.
It is NOT a simplex system at all and the quality is quite good with a
reliable ISP service.
Check out Skype www.skype.com (free for ip to ip) if you want to try VIOP
before you buy any. You will need to get a few people you wish to talk to
to use Skype also so U can talk to someone, or try your luck and find
someone to call at random.
Also if you do decide to go this route, you can also run your own VIOP
phone switch with asterix (free open source software) albeit more
complicated that you may be interested in, but if we ALL ran a VIOP switch
in our house/office we would not need a traditional ma-bell type phone.
