couple of items
Now that the Lego groups on Usenet are dead, I don't know where else to share (on Usenet) this hack (not mine) of making scale rope using machinery built out of Technics. This guy is a non-native- English speaker, but a contact of mine on flickr. He builds those insanely detailed model ship reproductions you've probably always... more »

solar 'telescope' hack
wanted to see venus transit, tried 'pinhole' methods, holding up magnifiying glass and loupe lenses, various combinations, no go. Couldn't see sun well enough through 2 pairs of sunglasses (twisted 90 degrees so minimal light passes through, polarized lenses) so I tried looking through binoculars - and it worked acceptably when I looked... more »

recipe hack, chinese style noodles
I'd been wanting to make my own fried noodles like you get at panda express or some similar place, but couldn't figure it out. After watching an online video where a guy made his own noodles I came up with a bit of a 'hack' version using beef flavored ramen. 1. boil beef flavored ramen noodles for a minute or two, leave boiling... more »

recovering old NiCd battery pack for cordless phone
(OBHACK is the post) I have an old cordless phone that I don't want to replace. NiCd battery pack (3 cells) ended up with 1 bad cell, so I checked Target for a replacement. They want about $20. On-line it's less than $5 but I have to wait a week or so. So I order the replacement on-line ANYWAY, and... more »

cat spray prevention hack
[link] it contains a really good 'spray 'em back' hack. stray cat lovers, be warned. C&C warning as well. Empty your mouth of food and beverages, visit the porcelain throne before watching, etc. ObHack: using 1x6 in sliding doorway with hole cut for air conditioner... more »

rsyncbackup
ObHack: rsyncbackup is my unimaginatively named rsync-based backup script, written after seeing Mike Rubel's seminal article on the subject. I've posted previous versions here over the years and here is 1.42. ...VERSION=1.42 AUTHOR="Yeechang Lee <y...@pobox.com>" COMMANDNAME=rsyncbackup ...BACKUPTO=/misc/rsyncbackup/ $HOSTNAME... more »

The UNOFFICIAL alt.hackers FAQ [last updated 3/27/1997]
ObHack: tuning a piano by yourself without a strobe or chromatic tuner. Use a reasonable quality portable electronic keyboard (one that you know is 'in tune' properly, or use a guitar tuner to tune the keyboard) and match the notes up by ear (chorus off for better precision). To deaden strings (so you only hear one or two at a time), cut up a large... more »

white board hanger
/me needs a place to write stuff out sometimes, and paper isn't always big enough to fit everything so I can see it. Home office lacked a white board. Bought a decent sized white board (finally) for about $20 at a local Target (pens + eraser extra) but they didn't have an easel to mount it on. Lacking wall space appropriate for a white board (and time... more »

haven't posted in a while
haven't posted in a while. thought I'd poke my head up and increase activity. Main reason, temporarily ran out of 'obhack' ideas. obhack#1: music recording software used slightly different clock timing for sound playback and recording, resulting in timing errors between tracks after a minute or so. known bug, bought different adaptor, but... more »
