Solid Body Electric Guitar
Up for auction is a vintage right-handed Yamaha SBG200 electric guitar
in LIKE NEW condition. This is a Japanese made guitar and it is truly
an example of one of Yamaha's finest electric guitars. THE FINISH IS
TOBACCO SUNBURST. Most of the others are a boring black. This guitar
resembles a Gibson SG and has that Les Paul feel as well. The upper
frets are not a problem with this guitar. Stock pickups are A-OK but I
was going to install Allan Holdsworth by Carvin pickups to jack up the
sound and tonal range but I never did. So this axe remains virgin and
vintage stock. I have seen this model axe go from $225 and up to $400
here on eBay. You decide what it's worth. The pictures here are 100%
representative of my axe. I can send more if you need such.
Some quick history on theses guitars: Yamaha approached Carlos Santana
about making him an SG-type axe and thus many varieties of Yamaha SGs
arrived in the USA. Gibson threaten to sue them over the SG name use so
Yamaha renamed them SBG's so here you have a post "lawsuit" Gibson SG /
Les Paul-ish high-end quality clone in one fine axe.
Other info: Chris Poland of ex-Magadeath fame and currently with OHM
was handed one of these SBG axes years ago and it blew him away after
he had played numerous other famous name and expensive custom axes.
Now, Poland is one mighty fine shredder and emotive jazz rock fusion
axeman that can blend the heavy-hitting blues-rock of Cream, Leslie
West, Robin Trower, Jeff Beck and the fusion fire of the Mahavishnu
Orchestra into one riff. And what axe blew him away? One of these: a
vintage Yamaha SBG. Poland now owns one of the top-of-the-line rare
Yamaha SBGs, a Yamaha SBG1300TS. But this basic balls-to-the-wall type
SBG axe is what converted him to a Yamaha SBG devotee Whether you want
or are looking for a Yamaha SG or SBG the only difference is in the
name on the truss rod cover. Here ya go!

The from the pics it looks like a genuine 3-piece through neck, but
difficult to tell on the neck photo. Very nice if it is, I would take it
over the big G any day. Pity about the SG shape though :-)

My SG-2000 has a three piece neck. This one looks more cheaply made and
simple.
These guitars should not be compared to a Gibson SG in any way, despite
what the ad says. The double cutaways slightly resemble an SG, but they
aren't shaped the same. The guitar is really Yamaha's rethinking of the
Les Paul, and its sound is in the same ball park, but is a bit
different. I think it has less character and personality than the
Gibson.
The SG2000 has a good reputation. Does it have a through neck or is it glued
in? The SG200 in the pic may be similar except for cosmetics. The back of
the body has the same timber structure as a three piece neck would, but I
can't tell from the pic whether it actually continues up the neck.

My SG2000 has a through neck - the sides are glued-on wings. It also
has a brass block, hidden by the top, that the bridge is anchored to. I
credit/blame that for much of the tone and response difference between
it and a Les Paul.
