So I've looked at Giganews, any other servers that might interest me?
I don't do binaries, this is pretty much the only group I visit
regularly.
TIA,
Jay
Hi J,
try eternal-september.org (formerly mozzarella)
cheap = 0.00$ and it works like charm - newsreader of course necessary.
regards
Jochen
I've been with Giganews since the ISP I had dropped newsgroups. I
guess about a year now. I have the base (bronze I think) package and
I've been very happy. I'm using google right now because I use it in
the mornings on the den PC because my better half sleeps in the
morning. You can killfile in google groups however, just download and
install greasemonkey for Firefox and then search for google groups
killfile. There's a script you can install and it works a charm.
I also used mozzarella which was ok I think. I also tried supernews
before I landed at giganews. IMO giganews is the best. Their retention
is higher than most anyone and if I remember right they have more
groups.
I use airnews.net. I have been with them for about 8 years pay about
$25 a month. Fast connection and GREAT retention ( non binary groups
sometimes as much as 3 years) I have had few if any problems with them
and ussually an email or call gets things fixed immediately. Use Forte
Agent for your newsreader ( i have used it since the earlt "90s)

No brainer.
Twenty-five simoleans per month? Vs. *free*?
Srsly, I don't miss AT&(cough asssholes) T at all... my OE
works exactly the same. I don't get binaries... but NG's are
really not for binaries anyway. Eternal September, baybuh!

Another vote for eternal-september. I use Outlook Express on my Windows
side and it works like a champ (including killfiles)! Now if we can just
get people to stop replying to certain "in-DUH-viduals", I could stop seeing
the posts altogether.

I like individual.net (http://news.individual.net/). Cost is 10 Euro
per year. Seems very stable and well-maintained, better and faster than
eternal-september, which I also subscribe to. E-s is adequate, but the
individual's better performance is worth the small cost to me.
Another OK free service is aioe (http://news.aioe.org/).
Useful information! Do you mind if I forward this to a couple of my
other groups, Monster?
I know a lot of Netzians would be forever grateful.

Service is great. Retention is great. It always works and provides me
with hours of entertainment( over a month). I would piss $25 away on
something stupid. Besides being cheap or free doesn't make it better
Jim
The plaudits of a grateful nation are yours.
Alas, there's no cash involved.

Like a bag of lollies. Heh, I remember a bag of lollies costing like 5c
when I was a young'n.
I'm paying $3.95 a month for Supernews. No complaints whatsoever.
What were the dinosaurs like, Mommy?

edible!
:)
I also regained my real name (Jerry Shaw, been posting here since
2001) in the process. I adopted the Jay Martin name a few years ago to
avoid the appearance of nepotism in some other activities involving a
car magazine which my brother edits, and which I am (was) a frequent
contributor. I am posting this through Google - for the last time -
because I didn't see my original post in my new ES account, and I
wanted to reply to myself here.
I tried to go with Thunderbird as a news reader, but it seems its
filter capabilities are fine for mail, but clumsily-implemented for
news. So I'm back to Outlook Express for now. Still a huge improvement
over Google.
WOW, killfiled four posters, and eliminated 98% of the crap. Usenet is
great when it's clean and respectful!
Thanks again, and see ya (as Jerry Shaw),
Jay - I mean Jerry - er um...

The cooker was on the right settings.... the timer on the power socket
wasnt. Ultimate FAIL.
Well, yes, but all of the cookbook recipes began "Serves thirty
thousand".
