Guys I'm thinking of buying a lapsteel, I'd like to learn how to play
one.. Can anyone recommend a decent one for me.. I'm not looking to
break the bank. To give you an idea what I am looking for; I'd like
the "Fender Stratocaster Made in Mexico" quality for a lapsteel In
other words something decent, but not total garbage either.

Thanks

I don't know of any of them that don't have something
going for them. I'd start by looking at Rogue - they're at
a very good price.

I've noticed Rogue has one that is a copy of a Valco. Looks pretty cool.

I think if I was looking I'd look at these.

Rondo has 2 lap steel models now that come with a nice h/c. They have some
decent reviews too.

My first lap was a post-war Magnatone, paid $100.00 at vintage shop in
Austin in '93.

My 2nd was a late '40s Gibson BR-9. paid $150.00 at same shop.

I bought a new Melobar lap in '95 for $150.00.

All have been used in live & studio. Just make sure whatever you get
is tuneable. My cuz has a piece of crap old Fender that you can't
even turn the keys on.

Those Rondos Jim posted look like a good bet.

Lap steels are nice simple things, and I wouldn't pay for a name like
Gretsch or Fender in a new one. I would go for a well-designed cheapo
like the SX, with a pickup that has adjustable pole pieces - the
adjustable bridge is a daft complication but it won't do any harm. The
next step up IMO would be paying for mojo and vintage pickup, like an
old Supro.

I would also be doing a search for cheapos that have a humbucker
pickup, to facilitate a useful pickup upgrade if desired.

Another option is to use an ordinary electric guitar lap style,
something I often do, or put a nut raiser on to convert it to lap
steel, something else I have also done. This has the advantage that
you can choose the guitar style/sound you want and resale will be easy
if you decide it isn't your thing.

I have one of these and for $200 it's a killer.
PS The tone control balances the pickup from humbucker to single.

This is where I heard about them:

http://www.gregcutshaw.com/Rondo/Rondo.html

Back then Rondo was selling them for $99.

The new dog eared model looks pretty cool. Several folks in the Steel Guitar
Forum recommend them but a few swapped pickups for something hotter if I
remember correctly.

I haven't play lap steel much lately. For one thing, it's harder than I
thought it would be.

that's what I bought myself, in the same ivory finish. What's cool
about it is it's designed so you can use it traditionally, or with a
strap that allows you to 1) use it like a normal standing position as
Gypsy showed off in "Gloria", or 2) have it with it lying flat as you
stand. This includes a gig bag, lap steel style slide and the strap.

I'm having fun with mine, but so far no recording - I don't want to
torture anyone. Yet. :)
