When capacitors attack......
Looks like my TAFE electronics teacher ;-) We used to blow caps up in
class. Ah, those were the days. Nothing like blowing shit up.
Mark
Makes me wonder how safe it is to leave a pc on all night...ughhh
Very. It will extend it's life actually.
Pray tell. You have fans spinning 24/7 and a HDD too if you dont use power
saving. The P/S constantly running its fan too. Then along comes a lightning
strike while you're asleep, surging ur mobo and bang!! :)
That guy was deliberately hooking them up backwards and applying too
much voltage to make them do that. It doesn't happen normally in
proper use. It *can* happen if a cap gets so (electrically)leaky that
it draws current and heats up, but thats what the vent cuts/seals are
for in the case. Gives the boiled electrolyte a way to escape without
popping the top.
I'd be more worried about counterfiet caps in yer pc mobo causing
problems with yer pc ....under normal use even.

That would happen anyway purely because you have it plugged in if the
surge was big enough.

well maybe not the board but power supply can if the power point is
still switched on.
A lot of cheap PC ATX supplies have sod all (if any) mains filtering. In
that event its roasted PC time. I'd get probably 1 every 2 months or so
where that has happened.
Hard drives have finite lives, so while leaving a computer on my
increase the life of the caps (not an issue on decent boards anyway)
your data is always at risk. Doubly so if you have a IBM/Hitachi hard drive.
The reality is decent fans, drives and boards shouldn't be expected to
fail till well after they have been made redundant. Of course there are
always exceptions. if you get a thunder storm, turn the PC off at the
mains. Easy really.

yes.... and... <drum roll> MAXTOR!!
Pieces of crap they are. I have a stream of workstations that have
these freakin drives in them. You know the ones that were all bogus.
Well guess what, they are all crapping themselves systematically.
Fortunately, I have spare drives and an imaging system via PXE ready to
drop the SOE image right on there.
I totally hate these Maxtor drives though. The mem buffer in them is
the issue. Its cheap crap memory that renders the drive useless.
I've never sold enough Maxtor (any) to notice a high failure rate.
Seagate and WD are generally OK, tho I have noticed that Command queuing
on Seagates using early SATA controllers can be a big issue. IBM
Deskstars have been nicknamed Deathstars for a good reason, very short
life span. Their Travelstars (2.5") are barely any better. Well, not at
all really.
Still, this may not concern me next week ;-) LOL.

Fingers crossed, matey.
I can't count the number of fried motherboards I've replaced that were
powered off at the time of impact and plugged into a UPS/Surge
protector. About a month ago I was at a site that lost all but one of
their NCR terminals and kitchen display system to a direct hit
lightning strike. They were all hooked up to pretty beefy Belkin surge
units.
At my house, all the PC's and televisions get unplugged from the mains
and the signal sources because I've lost a beautiful big screen to
lightning once because I didn't do that.
BINGO! I've tried to explain to my peers that's it's not the extra
heat they generate it's a poor buffer and also poorly/cheaply
constructed logic boards. The only time heat is a factor with a hard
drive is when they are consistently being heated and cooled (i.e. on
then off) My main PC has been on I'd say 95% of the last 3 years.
As far as Marks assertion goes yes HDD's do have finite lives as does
every piece of electronics but a HDD should not be active while a PC
is in sleep mode. If it is then it's having seek issues anyways and
should be replaced asap. Though the VRM's on a good board are fairly
efficient, there is still a slight spike (1v maybe) every single time
a PC is powered on or off and that does reduce the life of a board.
Ever see what happens when you bypass a VRM? LOL I have.. KABOOM!
The IBM/Hitachi Deathstar drives are the absolute worse..That's dead
on.

Yeah I've been victim to a few of those but Maxtor..... unreal!

Surge boards are a wank. They really last one time and thats it. Thing
is, you will never really know when you've been hit by a small surge
and when you have your "surge protector" is now shit. Best thing is
just to unplug stuff or, get a real UPS that actually does surge
protection. Batteries are good for soaking up the over flow.
Way back in prehistoric days I had a roommate who told a sad tale
of working the swing shift at Maxtor when they were still in N Cali
and more than just a brand name. Apparently at the end of quarter
when production was lagging someone from above would order the
relaxation of the testing standards so that enough drives would
pass final test to make quota and not disturb the suits...
Exactly... that entire video was extremely lame, IMO.
No '300fps' needed... indeed, just fast-forward through
it.

Same opinion as MZ, here. Near every PC with a fried board I've rebuilt
was switched off at the time, but not at the mains. And I'm talking
hundreds if not thousands over the last 15 years. This is where AT has
serious advantages over ATX. its uncoupled from the mains when its
switched off.
Surge protectors are largely a wank, indeed. PSU trannies switch pretty
damned quick too. And yup, a UPS is the answer. Personally I just keep a
stash of good PSU's in the shed and fortunately I've never had to
replace one of my own. Yet.
Hey MZ, didn't insurance cover the screen? Most electricity suppliers
(in Melbourne referred to as arseholes) have some insurance coverage.

We blew up much bigger caps, straight into the mains. Sounded like a
shotgun going off. Heh, as they say on mythbusters, Big Grande boom.

Yeah a while ago the lines leading into my block of flats was dodgy to
say the least and during a wind storm they tangled and bada bing, the
fireworks started. Wiped out everyones computers, microwaves etc in the
building. Basically everything that was on standby except my fridge and
TV for some reason. The power company paid to have things "fixed" but
it was a dodgy fix job for sure. Cheap assed fucks.
The lines were repaired and renewed and I changed electricity
providers. I still don't get how there are so many electricity
providers but still use the the same lines. Meh.
My biggest beef is about all of this "green power" nonsense. I tried it out
for myself by jamming a couple of wire coat hangers into the active and
neutral slots of the outlet and bringing them together. Rather than being
green, it was more of a blue flash. At least that's what I remember before
waking up in hospital...

works like wholesale and retail - power producer and power distributer. they
privatised the whole deal. you can choose both but like telstra, the
infrastructure is rented lines etc.
choosing greener power is a bit of a joke to my way of thinking when they
can't (read won't) even synchronise traffic lights to stop the amount of
shit pumped in the air by stationary traffic at peak hour. then there's all
the high rise lights on at night. what a joke.
Not in Vic, all the stations are run by single suppliers, in our area,
Alinta (which is short for Cnuts). All that happens is you can choose
who is billing you. A fucking joke and no one takes responsibility for
anything. I think when the Vic govt dreamt this shit up they forgot to
look in the dictionary as to what the word "Privatised" means.
I wouldn't piss on that mob if they were on fire. Bloods boiling now,
and its a real long story suffice to say that because of Govt regulation
they can just say oops (not even sorry) and let people suffer. Pricks.
Govt too for that matter.

This whole carbon trading thing is a crock of shit, you either use power
or you don't. Even if you don't run the party line as per Global
warming, its still a joke. If you use power, you pollute. If you drive a
car, you pollute (even an electric one) if you sell coal to India then
you are a hypocrite ;-)
When were we having that revolution, bro?
Mark
EXACTLY. look at the difference between hiway and city mileage. It's
all stop lights and speed limits. Many cars get optimum mileage
at 45 MPH.
