Here's a webpage I put up to describe the project in detail, if you're
interested.

The neck is still adjusting to string tension. Last night in my cold
ground-floor lesson studio, the action was quite good. Today in my
warm, upstairs production studio, it got to be pretty difficult to
play.

SWEET.
That's got to give you a ton of pleasure- working on a guitar
and improving the hell out of it with your own hands. Personally,
I'm not into the whole abused look--- w/ the exception of
Rory G's Strat...still, that's a fine job man. My '85 MIJ doesn't
have a skunk stripe, nor does it have the S/N above the
MADE IN JAPAN at the neck base. I'm LH, so we take
what we can get, but I DID slip much larger frets on her and
switched out the pups for Lindy Fralin SP43's (set). I admire
the detail work you did re; the pickguard / tea soak. Man, I
hope that guitar plays beautifully for you-- Question- I might
have missed it Dave-- those LOOK like jumbo frets in the pix-
can't tell- did you lose the 'lil Japanes skinnies? :-)
Lookin' good. Somehow the cracks in the finish add a nice touch to it.
Is that fretboard ebony, or just really dark rosewood? Looks great.

Sweet, mate. And its a Squier too. Fantastic. What was the neck oiled
with and how was it done?
Mark
Excellent. I bet she's a great player! KUDOS!
real nice! i especially like the black pickup covers and Volume/tone
controls. suits the guitar real well. I usually don't go for relic-ed
guitar but this one is a natural!
ah .. a Squier! cool!
yeah - sometimes it can take quite a few days or even a week
or more for the neck to settle in. After about a week under
string tension I can usually
do final tweaks and adjustments with truss rod and saddle/string height/intonation
and then it's all set in. I'll even give one last little turn on the neck
mounting screws just to make sure it's all snugged up.
I figure not only does the neck relief 'set in' under tension but it's also
where the neck sits in the neck pocket also 'sets in' too.
There's always a little bit of wood compression when you tighten
down the neck into the body. So that always takes a while to settle in properly.
Anyways good luck with it. Fender actually recommends a little bow to
the neck but I usually like it fairly level so usually a turn (or less) clockwise
on the truss rod fixes that middle relief bow.
Nope, those are the Japanese skinny frets. I think they look larger
simply by virtue of having been recently cleaned, and therefore shiny.
I'm a big fan of the medium-jumbo fretwire, so I plan to have it re-
fretted sometime soon.
Fretboard = Plain ol' 16-year-old Rosewood. The cracks DO do something
interesting, don't they? It's what initially caught my eye about it.

Lemon oil. Rubbed on lightly with a rag.

Thanks.
I initially had a black pickguard and white PU covers, etc in mind.
But I found that black humbucker for $5.50, and it was from a
different Japanese Strat. That was just too good to pass up, so I got
the black parts to match it. Worked well. I have a sunburst '94 Strat
that has been my workhorse for 15 years, and it has a parchment
pickguard and black covers, etc as well.
Yeah, the natural "relic" of it appeals to me as well.

Good stuff Squier, thanks.
After being immersed in water, and then left unstrung for 2 years, the
neck has earned the right to settle. I'm willing to be patient with it
for a while. Right now it is swinging wildly from (a.) slightly high
action above the 4th fret, to (b.) nearly unplayable, all depending on
where it resides.
It has only been a guitar for about 10 days now, and this time of year
is notorious for its fickle weather here in SW Ohio. It has been
ranging from 34 degrees to 70 over the last week alone, plus
alternating rain and shine.

Thanks, It's getting there. I am surprised at the tone. It's a much
beefier sound than my other strat, which is more chimey. Also, it is
the heaviest Strat I have ever met.

The price was right !
Got to say with the black knobs and PUP covers, it looks pretty good.
Nice MIJ mojo.
Mark
Bet some lemon oil is in order!

It looks nice.

Yes it was pretty dry. It had been immersed in water, and then left in
a dusty repair shop for 2 years.

Thanks. The black hex-screws on the lock-nut, and the black fine-
tuners sort of tie it all together nicely, I think. It looks
intentional instead of all cobbled-together.
I confess I spent a little time with a graphics program and a jpeg,
trying out different combinations.

Sacrilege! :-)
I failed to mention that I like the cracks despite the fact that I
hate reliced guitars...somehow those look like they belong there!
As long as the paint isn't flaking, yeah, why the hell not. Testament to
the punishment it's taken.
Mark
How many times did the neck need re-oiling? Was it just once?

If it works, it works ;-) I'd really love to build a tux Strat. That
white on black just looks awesome.
Mark
>It has only been a guitar for about 10 days now
I love that line!
