Any suggestions ?
thanks..
Jason
The circuit looks pretty simple. If you're confident that the pickups
are good, I'd look at either the switch itself being bad or a grounding
issue involving the ground wire from the middle pickup.
I didn't know the Gio's had coil tap/push pull pot on them.
If your humbucker has 4 leads and you don't really have push-pull
pot (that can engage the coil tap feature) then you'll need to
solder together 2 of the wires and the other 2 will be hot (to switch)
and ground (to back of volume pot).
You can't really go by color codes you have to go by N-S and which
coil each wire is coming from. So I would say solder together the
proper 2 wires and then tape off the ends. This leaves with 2 leads
for a normal internal/in series humbucker.
Also - your humbucker (when the switch is in the in-between position
for bridge and neck) may or may not be 'in phase' with the middle single coil.
If you get a nasally weak sound - they are out of phase. No problem.
Just reverse the hot and ground on the bridge pickup (what was the ground
to back of pot now goes to the switch and what was 'hot' on the switch
now goes to ground on back of pot). You'll now have both pickups 'in phase'
with each other.
Go to Seymour Duncan site and locate the HSS wiring diagram with NO coil tap.
Again - I might be wrong - but me thinks the GIO should be wired without
the coil tap feature. Also -- make sure your 5 way switch is aligned like
the diagram. You can flip around the 5 way to have the lugs match the
way the diagram is showing.
ok. that's all i can think of for now.
Look for an unexpected short from middle p/u to ground (at the switch?).
OKay thanks for the tips guys. The humbucker I'm putting in was from
a Gibson style guitar it only has two wires so I can't even coil tap it.
It's working right now with just the humbucker direct I'll give it
another try. The switch I bought is different than any other switches
I've seen on though because it's shaped in a circular shaped - like I
gues a CRL style. But instead of the lugs coming from the bottom they
are arranged in two semi circles on one side of the switch - with I
guess the common in the middle. You can see which wires would be
activated from which position you have the blade. And the center one is
always touching the blade. So that yould be the common wire correct ?
I'll be wiring this up hopefully within the next few days
right now I'm just happy that at least I've got the bridge pickup
working. I'll give updates with the hopefully positive results..
Cheers...
Okay it's been fixed. I removed the grounding wire that was going to
the switch. That was what the problem was. I completely re-soldered it.
With the same results. Once I removed the ground wire the middle pickup
(and middle-neck / middle/ bridge combinations) were working again !
