(oops)
Downloaded Finale Notepad (after going through all the registration BS).
It downloads as a Zip file which contains the self-extracting executable
file. I tried installing it. I get an hourglass icon for about 2
seconds then nothing, i.e., it won't install!

I'm thinking that maybe the most recent version is not compatible with
Win2K, which is my computer's OS, and that maybe I need to get (somehow)
an earlier version to get it to install properly. Any thoughts?

Seems it's not qualified to run on 2000:

Thanks! (Don't know why I didn't find that page myself.)

Oh well, I'll see if there are earlier versions floating around the net.

Do you have all the service packs installed?

Yep, and this is the first time I've run across this particular type of
glitch, and I install software all the time.

On to TablEdit!

I'm a longtime user of Cakewalk Sonar, and I ran version 2 for years on
Windows 2000. I wanted to upgrade to a later version, and in fact I
actually bought the upgrade to ver 5 because the price was too good to
pass up... but I wasn't about to install it for more than a year until
I finally built a new computer and went from 2000 to Windows XP. Sonar
5 wouldn't run on 2000.

Oh sure, I've had things like that happen. If I'm going to shell out
money for software I'm really careful to check compatibility issues
these days. But this is the first time I've run across software whose
installation program wouldn't even run!

By the way, one of the AGB posters (who I shall not identify unless he
wants me to) sent me the installation .exe for Finale Notepad 2007 (an
earlier version). I had no problems installing and using it, and it
seems actually easier and quicker to use than MagicScore School.

Thanks to all who helped out!

I don't know anything about W2k, but does
it have a "legacy mode" for running programs
like XP does, that allows running older OS
friendly programs in the new OS?

It may....I'm not sure. I've never run into compatibility problems with
older programs; I have a lot of really old scientific software on my
computer.

But the problem here is the opposite: *old* operating system, *new*
program. I suppose that's why the 2008 version of NotePad didn't
install properly whereas the 2007 version did. (Win2K = Windows 2000,
in case that wasn't clear.)

Yes, it does, but I've never found the feature to be very useful. In
Rich's case, it's the other way 'round, where his program required
features found only in the newer OS (XP) to run.

Even though I stuck with Windows 2000 for years and resisted XP, I now
that the XP is much more stable and has better functionality than did
2000.

Nil expounded in news:Xns9AD1BEBE...@216.196.97.136:

I suspect that part of the problem with Finale's NotePad is that
it allows you to "play the music". This probably has the software
using DirectX to do this, which keeps changing with each O/S
release among other things like the "installer" differences.

Snark.
