Guess you didn't really leave after all, Mike.
Good grief, you need to recruit allies?
If you could back up your over-generalized statements with facts, maybe
you could keep up with him.
By the way, not to take sides (I've seen the posts), but I think it's
fair to say that there's a segment of the music industry that has
over-used compression. Listening to some of my kids' CDs, I have to
turn down the volume to get the same overall sound level the same as on
my old classics. But the "volume wars" aren't endemic to the industry
as a whole. That's my take on it.

Shut up, you big baby.
How would you like it if someone were following you around harassing you?
I'm trying to resolve this without getting involved in a flame war.
> How would you like it if someone were following you around
> harassing you? I'm trying to resolve this without getting involved
> in a flame war.
I'd ignore it. That's what adults do. Spoiled children go around
whining and trying to get everybody else on their side. Nobody gives a
shit that somebody is being mean to you. Wah wah wah, Mommy, he said a
bad thing to me over there, and if you don't punish him I'm gonna have
a tantrum right here! You better do what I say, or wah wah wah you'll
be sorry.
Grow up, you petty, self-absorbed twit.
He's not "following you". He's been a regular there longer than you
have, if I remember right.
People in that newsgroup have the technical chops to address the issues
at hand. What point could there possibly be in bringing it here?
> How would you like it if someone were following you around harassing you?
> I'm trying to resolve this without getting involved in a flame war.
No you aren't.
Beat it.
Oh...My...God...this guy is every bit the loon I say he is.
Mike Rieves is also a lying sack of shit. Since January 1, 2008, I have
posted 28 messages (not including the latest responses to Mike's BS) in
a.m.h-s. which, according to my calculations, is a tad more than "one
message per month." During that same time period Mike posted 9. Since
"leaving" a.g.b. a week or so ago he's posted another 8. I'm afraid he's
about to repeat his pattern.
He basically killed a.m.h-s with his bullshit. Unlike a.g.b, a.m.h-s
doesn't have enough "signal" to tolerate all his noise. As I noted in
http://www.azwebpages.com/porky.htm, before Mike came along there were
400 to 500 messages per month. Upon his arrival it shot up in one month
to 2,000 with Mike accounting for 650 of them himself. This lasted for a
while until a lot of the regulars left. Because a.m.h-s was slow, he
came to a.g.b. and ignored a.m.h-s. The good thing was that a.m.h-s has
gotten back on its feet with some regulars returning.
Now that he's done with this newsgroup it looks like he's going back to
start up to his old antics. I'm just trying to stop it in his tracks
since a lot of the newbies don't know what a fruitcake he is.
He vowed to leave the newsgroup if I took down the Porky Page. I did,
but he broke his agreement, which is why it is back up.
> He's not "following you". He's been a regular there longer than you
> have, if I remember right.
By about a year, according to dejagoogle.
I must confess, my attention wanders, but I'm trying hard to recall a
post from Mike where he suggests for even a moment that he actually
plays a bass instrument.

OK... that makes sense.
NOT!
No, I didn't.
Send him this link, and then ignore him completely.

This part of the article is basically what I said to Mike:
Bendeth, who mixed Elvis Presley's 30 #1 Hits, says that the album was
mastered too loud for his taste. "A lot of audiophiles hate that
record," he says, "but people can play it in the car and it's
competitive with the new Foo Fighters record."

I wasn't threatening anything, I was just hoping that folks here might try
to get him to leave me alone.
And to answer Derek's comment, yes, I play bass, I own a Squier Bronco and a
Squier P-Bass. I've posted links to songs that I played bass on in this
group. I don't want any more flame wars with Jim here or anywhere else, I
just want him to leave me the fuck alone.
BTW,
http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/17777619/the_death_of_high_fidelity
points out exactly what I was saying, so why would Jim argue with me about
it?
You might want to note that the vast majority of my posts were in response
to YOUR posts attacking me, your posts during that period were about as many
as mine.

You're the liar, you put the Porky Page back up to get Gary off your ass.
The reason I was posting so much at Home-Studio was because I was defending
myself against your attacks, same as here.
Jim Carr just HAS to be the center of attention, just look at his posting
history, and look at how many of you he's pissed off over the years. You're
one sorry excuse for a human being, Jim.
I'm leaving AGB because it isn't fair to the rest of you if I have to
constantly be defending myself against Jim's attacks.
Stop being such a pansy. Please. Try and remember that you're a bass player,
responsible for keeping the world from spinning off into oblivion.
In 2004 he agreed to leave a.m.h-s. if I would take down the Porky Page.
I did. He left...for a few weeks. He then came back posting as Captain
Midnight. I called him on it via private e-mail to give him an out
without embarassment. He denied it was him (I know it was), but
magically Captain Midnight never posted again!
Within about a month he was back, using his real name for the first time
ever. That's when the Porky Page went back up.
> I'm leaving AGB because it isn't fair to the rest of you if I have to

Have you got any hobbies that you don't share with Jim?
If you do I suggest you find newsgroups that support those
interests.
If Jim follows you there ... don't come back and tell
us.
Yes, you did threaten:
"If you guys don't want me back in AGB in a flame war with Jim,
then I suggest that you try to reason with him about his obsession with
following me around and harassing me."
That is a threat, and it's childish. You are threatening to involve another
newsgroup because you don't like what he's doing elsewhere. You say he's
following you and harassing you. And you threaten to come here and start up
even more stuff.
Yeesh!

Awww. He pikkin on you? You want pertekshun?
Come here Mikie, I'll look after you.
Bertie
How old are you guys? Seriously, I'm curious. I don't know either of you
so it's a valid question that, I'll bet, others may also be wondering about.
Ah, I'd forgotten those mentions. Sorry about that.
I have to say though, the phrasing "Yes, I play bass, I own a Squier
Bronco and a Squier P-Bass" disturbs me.
If I was challenged by that question my answer would not have included
anything about ownership of basses. I can't imagine Lane, or John S, or
Jimmy Miller or many of the other regulars here would answer in that
fashion.
I own a fairly decent camera, and take quite a few photographs with it,
I've yet to call myself, or even consider calling myself a photographer
- even amateur photographer - even though I think some of them are
actually rather good.
Conversely, if by some terrible twist of fate I no longer owned any
basses, I'd still consider myself a bass player - maybe after a decade I
might start saying 'former'.
Maybe this is just a personal quirk. So, I wonder, how do most people
round here answer questions like 'are you a bass player' or 'are you a
musician'?
I agree that it's an odd way of answering the question.
Speaking for myself, I'd say I'm a musician but if pressed I'd qualify
it with the adjective "amateur". I play for my own enjoyment these
days, and I use whatever musical skills I have to put together "amateur"
recordings. At this point, my guitar chops far exceed my bass chops,
although that's changing...gradually.
> Maybe this is just a personal quirk. So, I wonder, how do most people
> round here answer questions like 'are you a bass player' or 'are you a
> musician'?
Are you a bass player? To that I answer yes and typically name whatever
band I'm playing in at the time. I then tell them that I'm a millionaire
and that I own a mansion and yacht.
Are you a musician? To that I sometimes say, "No, I'm not that flaky.
However, I do play bass in a band. Hey - you know what they call someone
who follows a band around from gig to gig? A bass player!"
Seriously, though, when answering the question about being a musician
it's all a matter of context. If I think someone is getting the
impression that I play music for a living, I will clarify that point
without being asked specifically. I almost always explain that I
consider myself a bass player, but that I also like to play acoustic
guitar. I always mention whatever band I'm in at the time.
Now, for the question you didn't ask: Suppose somebody asks me if I'm a
guitar player. To that I answer, "Not really. I can play guitar, but I
consider myself a bass player. I've only ever performed live on guitar a
few times. Mostly I do it for fun and for my own recordings when I can't
get a *real* guitarist to do it for me."

I apparently also missed the part where your posts are labelled "Read Only"
and nobody is allowed to respond to them especially if they have a different
point of view. I have to pay closer attention to these little soap operas,
they're soooo interesting, right up there with a trip to the dentist.

Some people will be twelve years old if they live to be ninety-seven, is
that the sort of thing you had in mind?
Are you a bass player? -- Yes, thanks for noticing.
Are you a musician? -- Yes, I am.
Can I borrow twenty dollars? -- No.

Yeah, but I want to know if either of these guys is actually 12. I can't
tell from these dialogues. Coming in here to get us to take sides and
make big meanie go away? Following someone in here? I left this stuff
behind many years ago and think of adults as doing the same.

I saw Rieve's picture on his soundclick page. He looks to be about 60
years old, but you'd think he was 8 from his whining.
Rieves is like 60? Lol. Not sure why but I find that very funny. Lol.

It's one thing to enjoy an argument, lots of us are in that category. But
clearly there are other factors at work here, these guys have emotional
issues that compel them to act like oversized children. Some of these folks
can fairly be called trolls, they enjoy getting a reaction and especially an
angry reaction, it's like heroin to them and they'll use whatever it takes
to feed their addiction including using sock puppets, making and breaking
treaties, enlisting allies and so on. Others are maybe displaying a
proprietary interest, defending their turf against outsiders, or they figure
they're conquering someone else's turf which makes them the baddest S.O.B.
in the valley, it's an odd way to look at a Usenet discussion group but it's
certainly not uncommon. For the rest of us it's either make popcorn and sit
back to enjoy the show, or ignore it as best we can and get back to the
serious business of making fun of drummers, 'cause reasoning with these guys
seems to be mostly a waste of time.

You've also got the people who follow these threads, then comment on
them like they're somehow better than the people participating.
Prediction: This will become the longest a.g.b. thread of 2008.
No way. I've already got an alias lined up to post the following.
Hi, I just inherited some money from my uncle, an old school bass
player. We both agreed, however, that Jaco invented fretless basses,
Wooten plays too many notes, and that Tal Wilkenfeld is the best bassist
to come along in years.
Anyway, I'm gonna spend some money on new bass gear, but I have a few
questions:
Tube or MOSFET?
Bi-Map or Full-Range?
Paper or Alumninum Cones?
Four, Five or Six Strings?
Fretted or Fretless?
Squier, Mexican or American Fender?
Flatwound, Roundwound or Groundwound?
OOOOOHHH!!!! I'll get this one guys!
The answer is YES!
By the way, which alias are you going to use so I can catch it right
away?

"Somehow?" There's nothing "somehow" about it, when it comes to having the
sense to stop poking a stick through the bars of the troll cage some folks
*are* better than others. The trolls I can understand, their behavior
springs from overly harsh toilet training or fetal exposure to paint fumes
or something along those lines. What is harder to figure out is folks who
otherwise appear able to make an interesting contribution instead choosing
to act like oversized children at the least excuse. Hey, lots of us stopped
to throw a few peanuts at the trolls and watch them leap around shrieking.
But making a career out of it, not to mention explaining the history of the
whole sorry tale in fine detail again and again as if an explanation makes
such childish behavior seem reasonable, well that's probably not something
most people would want on their permanent record. Your choice man, you can
act like one of the grownups, or not.
Quit pretending you're any better. It's all a matter of degree. The only
people who have any real sense are those that ignore the threads
entirely. Beyond that all we're arguing about is who got muddier. That,
my friend, is truly childish.
I'm not pretending to be blameless or a model citizen. I've got a dog in
this fight. When I get into any pissing match, it's because I'm really
ticked off and/or personally offended. Could I handle it better? Sure,
but I don't *want* to. I don't ever pretend I'm justified or victimized.
This is Usenet. What I and others do happens in thousands of newsgroups
every damned day. If any of us really wanted civil discussions, we'd be
on any of a hundred moderated discussion boards for that given topic.
What amazes me is that you have no interest in the senseless arguments,
yet you continue to read them. You read them enough to know that people
are repeating themselves. Instead of ignoring it, you jump right in and
start giving lectures like you're superior.
But guess what? The minute you jumped in, you became one of us. This,
too, happens in thousands of newsgroups every day. You're part of the cycle.
The only *real* difference between me and you is that I freely admit my
role without pretending I'm something that I'm not.
Can I have extra butter, please?
> and get back to the serious business of making fun of drummers, 'cause

Did you hear about the drummer who dragged the beat so bad he decided to
kill himself? He threw himself *behind* a train...
> Quit pretending you're any better. It's all a matter of degree.
In a sense you're right, it is a matter of degree, just as taking some
paperclips from the office and robbing a bank are different in being a
matter of degree. BTW, I'm the guy with the paperclips.
> The only people who have any real sense are those that ignore the threads

Nonsense, there is an enormous difference between one post telling a troll
he's acting like a jerk and going to the trouble of setting up a website
dedicated to said troll and then reminding the world of your whole history
with the idiot again and again. You don't have mud on you, you're buried in
it up to your neck and you're the one who dug the hole and then pulled in
the mud on top of yourself.
> I'm not pretending to be blameless or a model citizen.
And I didn't say you needed to be, I just suggested it would be nice if you
acted like a grownup instead of a large child.
And so on, like I said, it's your choice, if you get something out of making
it tough to decide who is more pathetic, you or the trolls, so be it. Just
remember, when you argue with an idiot it's hard for bystanders to tell the
difference between the two of you.

We've switched to one of those healthy vegetable oil spreads for popcorn,
still use real salt though.

Heh, good one.
Either you haven't been paying attention or you are in serious need of a
history lesson, because the regulars in this newsgroup have been acting
like twelve year olds ever since Mike Rieves invaded the newsgroup in early
2007. While I don't know anything about the situation before that, people
don't change their colors overnight, so common sense would suggest that it
was pretty much the same.
> By the way, which alias are you going to use so I can catch it right

Robbing banks? Don't be such a drama queen.
Look at the subject of this thread. You KNOW it's not bass related, but
you're reading it anyway *and* bitching about it. You remind me of the
people who listen to Howard Stern on a regular basis just so they can
complain about him.
In this thread (or any thread) your noise is not any less noisy than
mine. The only issue is volume. You've made 5 posts to this thread
compared to my 6. My name is in the subject, so at least I can say I
have a reason to participate. What's your excuse? Do you really think
your lectures will change anything? Here's a clue: They won't.
The beauty of Usenet is that you can avoid any thread you want - just
don't open it. With a couple of clicks you can filter it out forever. If
you think my posts are childish, then in just a few seconds you can set
your newsreader so that you never see a post from me again (I always use
my real name). The signal to noise ratio of what you see is entirely
within your power.
But you actually LIKE this stuff. That's why you read it and respond to
it. Be a man and admit it. Everybody reading this thread is getting some
form of enjoyment out of it, even if that enjoyment is from being pissed
off.
If you want to lecture, go right ahead. I won't condemn you for it. But
I *will* remind you that you are an integral part of the system you are
condemning. Noise is noise.
It's like we're all in a movie theater. I'm talking loudly with someone
and disturbing others. You start talking loudly with your buddy about
how loud *I* am and thus disturbing others. Then we shout at each other
across the aisle about who's disturbing people more.
But, yes, I'm the childish one, and you're the grown-up.
> Nonsense, there is an enormous difference between one post telling a troll
