Well this weekend I bought another ho-bag. an Ibanez Soundgear SR305DX
5. I didn't even plug it in, it was a discounted used model at a music
store close out. (Can you say 85 bucks?) It was hanging on the wall
and I figured the battery was good and I looked at the neck and it was
good with nice action. Somebody had strung it with fender tape's and
must have picked them to death because the 'tape' coating was missing
from the D and A string, like a pick had sawed the coating off. Eh...
whatever. And many of you know, I'll take function over pride any
day!... Well, maybe not even that.

But I figure, I've wasted more money on lesser children in the past,
so in the bag it went..

I decided to play it at church this morning that is, *IF* it'd play at
all, and Man did the thing play and sound good! Seriously- I love it!

The tone isn't dead and it isn't clanky. It seems that this is a great
combination of plank and cloths line. It's light and handles well.24
frets and no "Mr. Scratchy-pots". No slappy-tap, or cew-cut
scissoring here. This thing would make and excellent blues machine!

Even though I'm not a fan of the color, this bass will become the new
princess of the ho-bag harem ( at least for a while)

Yeah, not counting URB sets. Look at the price of Tomastik's
nowadays...

Yeah, with the exchange rates being what they are at the moment, I've
bought an individual upright bass string that cost more than that bass
of your.

Those Ibanez SG basses are pretty good instruments. I used one of the
cheapest models as the basis for my 8 string conversion. I actually
thought I was getting the model you have, but I didn't look closely
enough at the blurry picture on trademe. It's not a bad instrument -
and perfect for the 8 string conversion.

The necks are a bit thin though, which takes some getting used to.

I have an Ibanez 4 string fretless (BTW, same purchase rules applied)
and the neck on it is so thin it seems to feel like you're playing a
broom handle with one third surface shaved off. I don't like it... But
it does sound good!

I hear you on the Thomastik prices!
I spent almost that much on Thomastik Jazz Flats for one of my 5 string
basses, and easily spent at least double that on Thomastik Superflexible
upright strings.

I've got an SR300DX bass that my kids bought me several years back.
Basically the same bass but with "P" and "J" style pickups (and four
strings).

It's definitely a serviceable bass. I'd play it more except I'm an old
school type so my Ric 4001 and Fender J fretless get a little more love from
me.

You STOLE that bass you dog! Of course you love it! These are seriously
great instruments. They are the "Modern" classic bass in the same vein as
Fenders being the "old school" classic bass.

Which is why I own two: A GSR206 and an SR506. Both were used in the $200
+ range. Both are amazingly cool instruments. They play like a dream and
have a fat full tone that just kills. Ibanez thin necks are world famous
(if that matters to you, personally I love chunky necks like G&L, but I
love those thin Ibbys too!)

Many people think of these as "beginner basses" and in a sense they are
because lot of beginners choose them because of the modern tone and
price. But just like there are pros who find Squires and keep playing
them for the tone, I know pros playing various SRs as well. If yours is a
good one, you have a keeper.

Tone is where you find it.

PS. I got my first Ibby (the 206) one day when I wandered into Music Go
Round and it was hanging on the wall. A most unimpressive black paint
cheap bass. I plugged it in and tried it and INSTANTLY I knew that I'd be
leaving the store with it in spite of the price being a tad high for that
model. But the point is that when a bass has it, it has it! And this bass
had it, it was SO worth the extra cash. (And then of course it goes
downhill from there...)

You got that right!

So the Ibanez ho-bag made it's debut tonight playing with Ed Waid and
the Nashville North Band. It played flawlessly and had great tone.
really smooth with the worn out Fender tapewounds.

I got it dialed in just the way I want it and feel like doing the
Chris Squire thing and duct-taping the knobs so they don't move!
For me it's the perfect CW/Blues machine!

It's a definite keeper...

Heh. That's mojo right there. Broken in the perfect way.

Yeah, This bass had a great set up, so i figureed tthe previous owner
knew what they wanted in an instrument. But i can't figure out why
they got rid of it, unless they wanted a) something that cost more or
was more 'prestigious' or b) They got tired of being ribbed for
playing an "Ibanez"

?;^ )

Same thing went for mine. As soon as I touched it I could tell it was set
up perfect. (mine came with ground wounds on it) Which made me realize it
was a "keeper", but then that got my head spinning like yours over why in
the world did the previous owner ever sell it?
