Had a chance to spend some time with this in between food courses at
Christmas...The kids had a guitar and drum set. Kind of fun to play
along...Do you think that this sort of interactive music software has
at least some form of "value" in attracting people to music, or at the
very least may be useful to teach them the fundamentals of rhytm?
Clearly, it will never replace a formal/informal education and live
playing (I hope..)

Great game, if you have bourbon, assuming you have no interest in accuracy.

Bourbon and accuracy,,,is that an oxymoron? (Now, that is NOT
latin...rather, from Greek oxymoron, from neuter of oxymoros (sharp
dull), from oxys (sharp) + moros (dull). The word moron comes from the
same root.." you can see a thread developing here...:-)))

It will probably influence most kids who play it to study music as much as
other games influence them to become race car drivers, astronauts,
commandos, superheroes and so on. It's nice to think more kids will
actually try to learn to play from these games, but the reality is probably
that it's just another electronic game to them, one of many they will play
over the years.

My wife has asked me if GH could actually help someone learn to play
guitar. I've always said, I couldn't see how.

Maybe the drums in Guitar Hero world tour or Rockband, but not the guitar or
bass.

Yes on both counts. I used to be down on GH until I finally "got it".
It's not an instrument. It's just a game. Yes, I'm sure that it will
inspire some folks to actually learn an instrument who might never
have done so otherwise. And turning another generation on to the
Beatles and other classic rock music just sweetens the deal IMHO.

When I first retired from teaching school, several of my colleagues
prevailed upon me to teach guitar to their children. The first was the
son of a friend who happens to be an outstanding mandolin player who
plays with a nationally known bluegrass band. I began by asking the boy
what kind of music he wanted to learn to play. He said, "Anything but
bluegrass."

I don't think he disliked his father, but he had heard enough bluegrass
to last him. Therefore, as in your example, it was of no interest to him.

My son plays Guitar Hero on a regular basis. He has put a total of

about an hour into trying to learn a musical instrument (violin). I
have tried to encourage him to start playing guitar, not intensively,
but he couldn't be arsed. There's three acoustic guitars and four or
five basses in easy reach, none of which I'd stop him playing, but
they're of no interest to him. So a) it wouldn't help someone play
guitar because it's just buttons and b) it doesn't actually make
anyone interested in playing guitar.
