What bass is best for a beginner?

to let him have my Fender Mustang Bass that I have used and still do.
The problem that I have with this is that the scale length is 30'' and
it worked perfectly because of my small hands.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Ibanez has some good basses for reasonable prices. I've got an Ibanez
SDGR (apparently no longer in production) that I like a lot. It's got
active circuitry. But even the cheaper Ibanez basses seem to be of good
quality. Check out some options here:

(Look particularly at the SR400QM.)
p.s....the typical Ibanez bass (including the SR series) has a 34" scale
length. Personally, I think most 13-year-olds can handle that.

SX basses are pretty good, but their necks are a bit chunky. The price'd

Bought myself a Yamaha RBX270 as a starter bass.
Can't fault it's construction and sound.Good value for money.

one that plays and sounds good that fits your budget.
squire makes decent fenders and epiphone makes some decent gibsons.
i'd opt for the squire, but get the nephew to play a few of them first
because they are not created equal.

teacher at work. When he gets older and sticks with it, it'll be time to
move up, but this one is sufficient for now.

I wouldn't worry too much about the small scale and size of teh hands. My
hands are not large by any means and yeah, the bass neck seemed a bit of a
handful at first... but you soon get used to it. I even have a 5-string ;-)
I went for a Jazz bass at first because the neck was just so slim and easy
(being used to guitars). But 34" scale. There are other basses around (some
Ibanez?) with similar slim necks.
I've ended up preferring chunkier necks and wider spaces between strings, by
the way...
I think as a first bass, a 34" scale one and maybe slim neck would work
well.

I have Ibanez myself. They are good basses.

but must be playable so they dont give up too easily.
narrow neck and 30" scale, good enough for Mcartney and Wyman.
Mustang sounds ideal.
