I don't want to go that soft. I have flats on my fretless now. I like em, but wanna try something different.

Nylon wrapped are in there somewhere though they tend to be a whole
different animal more toward the flats side.

About the only thing truly different from what you mention are Thomastik
Infield flats. They are quite different from normal strings. They
reportedly last forever. Take you wallet.

Seriously, if you want a tone that is brighter than flat, but less
bright that a new set of rounds, just leave your rounds on. Eventually
you get to a tone that is like what you describe.

You could also try DR coated strings. When you put them on new they are
less bright than new uncoated rounds - a bit like rounds after a week.
Which is how they continue to sound for a good few months - until enough
of the coating is rubbed off that you end up replacing them for
aesthetic reasons.

I probably change the DR Neons just as often as I would conventional
rounds, but with conventional rounds the tone is all gone, whereas the
Neons sound like 3 week old rounds.

I really like the DR coated strings, too. But I also recall that GHS
has a very good website diagram (maybe others do, too) that
illustrates the relative brightness of different strings styles. Worth
a look.

The best sounding bass I ever played (although that statement relies
on memory, so it's suspect) was owned by a friend with who I used to
jam in my youth. I used his bass. It was a VERY old Fender P. After
my orgasm subsided, I asked him the secret of the sound. He said it's
because of the strings. They were 13 years old.

Buy a new set and wait...and wait... and wait... and wait....

I think the size of strings makes a big difference too.
I like round wound heavy's.

Evidently these (in 5 string) were strung on my Ibanez , They're worn
but the sound so good and smooth, I won't be changing them any time
soon. I've ordered a set for my fretless 4

I put some half-rounds on the fretless before practice last sunday. they sound great.

Yup. They are my "standard" fretless strings! But they aren't too shabby
on fretted either. I hate that zip-zip noise of rounds and while ground
wounds (half-rounds as D'Addario are my "standard rounds") aren't as
bright, they are smooth as a baby's bottom! And no zip-zip crap.

I don't know if because they're new or what, but they respond to vibrato very well. just a little bot o wiggle does it.

I recently bought a set of Elixir Stainless Steel 105's.
My old strings were DI reds that were very flat sounding after several years and there was not much red left.
The Elixir SS strings sound good with tons of sustain.
I bought a Bass String Mufler to tame them down.
Sounds supurb.
Almost like an upright.
