I hate no song.

So present band, singer wants to do "Too Close" by Alex Clore.
Sez I, "We can't do it the way we are instrumented."

Turns out, I'm wrong.

Horrible tune to listen to. But playing it to a bar full of people who
absolutely love it to death. Which is, I dunno, any bar full of people.
It's a wonderous thing.

> 2. ANY Disco

Well, I would have agreed with you a few years ago until circumstances
caused me to learn to play some of that.

Some of the very best basslines, in terms of challenge, and in terms of
groove, came out of that disco era.

My position now, after a long period of consideration, is that a bass
player who discounts Disco out of hand is doing themselves a huge
disservice as a bass player.

> 3. ANYTHING that I cant discern WHAT the Singer is saying.

My absolute favourite songs are all in languages I cannot understand.
My mother once commented on something I was listening to "I can't
understand a word these people are saying". My response was "Of course
not. They are singing in Spanish".

Absolute favourite piece of music with lyrics - we have Latin, Several
african languages, something that is probably hebrew and Love Shack, The
Letter, The Riverboat Song and Free Hand and Spanish - or maybe Romany -
I never actually checked.

A lot of newer songs where the bass plays one note in 1/8 notes
throughout the song.

The Master Carol Kaye recorded on that and she said in her memoirs

If you mean songs in general, the list is way too long.

If you mean songs I hate to play,
I don't often play cover songs anymore, but Some Kind of Wonderful and Brown

I get satisfaction out of playing almost anything well, and this song/
groove/bass line is far from the bottom of the barrel.

I'm not sure, but I don't think that makes me a turd.

Takin' Care Of Business. Because......most really mediocre garage bands
full of guys my age do this song. Song has been around forever, they
have been around forever, the guys in the garage band. Wouldn't they
have it down tight by now? No! It sounds like they just learned it or
learned it from memory without a listen and don't care. After seeing
this over and over I now cringe at the thought of this song. And it
wasn't that good anyway.

Nope. The fact is, although we probably all discounted it as trivial
pop when it came out, the song grooves and people love it.

It was unashamadly written as self-parody - but if you listen to the
words...

It's about a guy stuck in a musical rut, who decides to check out some
other music. Music which, particularly at the time, was considered an
anathema to rock and rollers. He discovers that this other music turns
out to be really a lot of fun. And, although it's not easy to suddenly
become funky when you're all pasty and square, it not only can be done,
but it is very rewarding.

As musicians this song should be our mantra or something.

I played that song onstage with Randy Bachman on national tv. Although I
could appreciate playing the song with the guy who wrote it, I still didn't
enjoy it.

When people you are playing for request a song. If you can play, and
you don't, because you think it is beneath you, *then* you are a turd.

It doesn't matter what the song is.

If you know how to play it, or have a reasonable expectation that you
can muddle through, and play, it then you are a proper musician playing
a gig.

I was surprised and then amused when I saw a video of Wild Cherry doing
this - white guys with bubble perms playing Les Pauls wasn't my idea of
funk. (You can't get funky with a Les Paul, right?) But then I
remembered the Average White Band and thought again.
