Does anyone have, currently, on their instrument? Curious...And
indeed, are they a "customized item" - if required - on a new bass,
these days?

I assume you mean the Fender ashtrays.

I don't have them on any of my basses, there's no need for the pickup
cover on basses with humbuckers and all of my basses (including the one
with J style pickups) have humbuckers.

Most Fender basses you see in shops don't have them, either they were
taken off at some point or they were never on. Ditto the 'thumbrest'.

There are a number of new Fender basses that do come with them, some
reissue/vintage, but not all, so if you really wanted one it wouldn't be
too hard to find one.

A little research reveals that 6 of the 62 Fender bass models currently
on offer have the ashtrays.

It also reveals some things that just make me wonder what they are
smoking at Fender.

'Modern Player Telecaster Bass' (Telecaster with oversize humbuckers)

'Blacktop Jazz Bass' (Jazz bass with two precision pickups!?!)

Pawn Shop Bass VI

Although I think they are being deliberately ironic with that one "...
the Pawn Shop Series introduces yet another pleasingly unconventional
assortment of "guitars that never were but should have been,"

When I got my Fender, the first thing I did was take them off, and
they haven't been on since (and that's about 40 years).

Some of my SX Fender clones have them on just for looks (The Fenders
don't) Mine aren't real Fender Ashtrays but Chinese imitations.

See here $17.95 a set:

I never use the pickup covers though because for me they get in the way
even though I do think they look cool!

Then, in another 20 years when you put them back on to sell it on eBay
some wag will claim that they aren't original because the wear pattern
isn't authentic for a 60 year old bass.

Derek,
1- I don't think I'll be reinstalling - I'm not even sure I know where
they are. And although I have a thought where to find them, I don't
feel like looking. No point.
2- Not only will I never sell this bass, I've left instructions to be
buried with it. "Place is vertically on my stomach, place my right
hand over the pickups (thumb resting on the top of a pick up, fingers
on the strings), my left hand second finger around the third fret (G
major scale position), thumb behind the neck." Perhaps I should have
someone throw a wire in the casket as well...

Well, so are my strings, but THEY still work!

His tombstone could be an amp, so in case you can take it with you we could
hear him jamming.

I've always wanted to add them to my 80's '51 P reissue purely for
aesthetics.
I'm sure they'd get in the way, but it would complete the look! Finger rest
too!

Let me save you the money: just try playing your bass while it's in
it's case (preferably a hardshell). You'll get the idea and won't have
to make the purchase.....

I do debate with myself about that... that my beloved might serve
another owner as well as it served me. But even a heavenly bass
probably won't fit my fingers as well as one with all those years of
association.

But this could be another thread: What characteristics would a
Heavenly Bass have?
I'll start:
It would weigh almost nothing.
It would never go out of tune.

Your turn.

The scale length of electric bass guitars is just too short. Even
double basses at at 40" are about half as long as they should be to get
the same tone and projection that a violinist gets with a tiny little
sound box. And the strings should be fatter and heavier.

Of course then we would not be able to play it horizontally and look
cool like the skinny stringed guitarists.

There have been a few examples of full size basses, Vuillaumes Octobass
etc. but they often require two people to play and are really not tour
friendly.

In heaven, physics will be different to allow all the rich tonal
characteristics that we've been denied, in a bass sized so we can
actually play it.

Hmmm.... I get your point, Derek, but I think the premise assumes
(and there's the weak link, I know), that we're fantasizing about
heaven without changing all the acoustical laws of physics here
(hear?) on Earth. I could be wrong. I tell my students to think
outside the box, so why shouldn't we.
OK, I think I just stated opposing viewpoints there.
Oy.

In heaven we get to have our cake, and eat it too, as well as try other
peoples cakes. Otherwise it would not be much of a heaven...
