My brother-in-law is a fun singer to have at a jam session. If he
doesn't know the words, he'll make some up or just substitute some
lyrics from "Stairway to Heaven" since that's one song he (almost) knows
by heart.

Turns out this band, The Beatnix, took that skill to the extreme

That's from an Aussie show "The Money Or The Gun" which was around about
20 years ago. Each week, apart from general hilarity (and it actually was
funny) a guest band or musician would do a version of Stairway To Heaven.
There were some fairly well known (in Australia anyway) artists
participating.
