I have been playing for two years.
i like bands like Metallica, Pantera, Korn, System of a down etc.
I also like guitarists such as santana, al dimeola and eric clapton.
I have a gt-3 pedal board, a yamaha strat copy and i am looking into a new
amp.
i want quality and reasnoble volume so that i can play in some live
situations.
my budget is about $1250 australian.
for some reason i have a liking for marshalls.
but i am just like that.
Should i bother with a valve or not?
The vibe is always valve is better, but is it really necessary.
I have my eye on the marshall valvestate VS232.
does any one know if that is a good buy at $1200 aus.
Thanx.

A used Marshall JCM 800, and 4x12" cabinet. I don't know what Aussie
dollars will buy you, but I'd avoid the Valvestate. On the other hand,
you've only been playing 2 years, so it might be a good time to make
mistakes in amp purchases, but my guess is that a JCM800 is what you
really want.

Hi Errol,
I'd like to also recommend the same as Pete suggested. A Marshall JCM 800
with a 4x12 is an awesome set up. I live in Melbourne and in february I
bought myself such an amp with a marshall 4x12 for $1000 so I got quite a
good deal. Just watch your local trading post and you should see them on
sale from time to time.
I'd recommend the single channel JCM 800 over the two channel version as the
two channel version uses diode clippers in the lead channel (read: solid
state devices) and so to most doesn't sound as good. It also has a
tendencies for the gain on the amp to bleed onto the clean channel. So If
you can find yourself a single channel JCM 800 and a quadbox you should be
happy with such a rig. Just put an overdrive pedal of some sort in front of
it and you get instant high gain with great tone to boot!
The model numbers for the JCM 800's that are single channel are 2203 and
2204. these are the 100 watt and 50 watt models respectively. Also look for
the ones with the two inputs above each other rather than side to side as
they are built slightly better. You may also consider the Marshall JMPs as
the master volume models of them are the same as the JCM 800 single channel
models except feature point-to-point wiring which generally means better
layout of the parts in the amp thus making it more serviceable and even
mod-able should you choose to go that route. Don't get me wrong though, the
JCM 800's are still built like tanks and still worth it if you can get one
at a good price!
You may also consider the combo versions if a half-stack is a bit much for
you. You can find the JCM 800's in combo's in the configurations of 50 watt
1x12, 50 watt 2x12 and 100 watt 2x12. Their respective model numbers are:
4010, 4104,4103
Good luck with your finding yourself a JCM 800! I think they're a great amp
for their price.

Regards
Jacob Pyke

Ask GM Arts. http://www.chariot.net.au/~gmarts/index.html
He lives in Adelaide Australia, and is very knowledgeable in electric
guitars and amps. He can tell you what's available in Australia and how much
they cost in Australian currency.

FYI, $1250 aussie dollars is roughly $607 US dollars, as of
today.

The currency conversions are correct. If you mean supply and
demand creates an Aussie music market that's alot different than
the USA, now that's a different story. I know where you're coming
from on this. I was last in Sydney and Melbourne in 1997 and man,
those music stores were asking outrageously expensive prices for
Marshalls and Fenders. Its crazy. Take beef for example. Visitors
to Australia from Japan pay thru the nose for beef and take it
home with them on ice. Why? Little if no beef supply in Japan;
considered a luxury there. Guess Marshalls and Fenders and other
imported amps are also in the luxury category in Australia?

In Finland you´d get JCM800 or JMP on that $350 US amp buying dollars :-)

Or even Valvestate ;-)
