Dixie Chicks tour struggling in several markets
By Ray Waddell Wed Jun 7, 7:07 PM ET

NASHVILLE (Billboard) - Initial ticket sales for the Dixie Chicks' upcoming
tour are far below expectations and several dates will likely be canceled or
postoned.

Ticket counts for the 20-plus arena shows that went on sale last weekend
were averaging 5,000-6,000 per show in major markets and less in
secondaries, according to sources contacted by Billboard. Venue capacities
on the tour generally top 15,000.

In contrast, the band's new album, "Taking the Long Way," sold 526,000 units
in its first week, according to Nielsen Soundscan, the third-largest sales
week of 2006. The album logged a second week in the period ended June 4,
according to sales data issued Wednesday.

Despite those numbers, early ticket sales are clearly not meeting
projections. The plug was pulled on public on-sales for shows in
Indianapolis (August 23), Oklahoma City (September 26), Memphis (September
27) and Houston (September 30) because of tepid pre-sales in a national
promotion with Target stores.

The Memphis show has been pulled off the route and the status of the shows
in Indianapolis, Houston and Oklahoma City remains uncertain. Industry
speculation has it that much or all of the tour may be postponed. At the
very least, it is likely routing and capacity will be reconfigured.

Early ticket sales for this tour are in marked contrast to the Chicks' last
proper outing in 2003 when a national on-sale moved some 867,000 tickets the
first weekend, and second shows were added in several markets. The Chicks
ended up with the top-grossing country tour of 2003 at $62 million.

But not all shows on this tour are below projections. "We're happy (with our
on-sale) and comparatively seem to be ahead of most," says John Page, Global
Spectrum COO/GM at Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, where the trio is booked
for July 25. A second date was added for the Air Canada Center in Toronto,
where the first show sold out in eight minutes. "Canada loves the Chicks,"
says ACC booking director Patti-Ann Tarlton.

After two shows in London, the North American tour was set to begin July 21
in Detroit. But with ticket sales below expectations, it is possible the
route and capacities may be further reconfigured. The Chicks are managed by
Simon Renshaw and booked by Rob Light at Creative Artists Agency, both of
whom declined to comment.

The Dixie Chicks will be at our local themepark, Frontier City.

The brunettes will be running the bumper cars, and that blonde one is
taking tickets on the Tilt-o-Whirl.

Man it's been 10+ years since I've been to "Frontier City."
Didn't know it was still there. Last I heard it had been
bought by some Vietnamese immigrants, or was that just rumor?
Kind of Ironic having a Cowboy theme park run by Vietnamese.
Maybe they ought to redecorate and call it Ho Chi Min city ;-)

I was surprised to find out not too long back that OKC has
a small "Chinatown" section. I've been meaning to get back
down there and try some of their food.

Drove around the much acclaimed "Bricktown" section; and it
looked to Yuppie-tourist to me. We didn't even get out of
the car; because of all the winos and creepy looking people
around the parking lots.

America never ceases to amaze me. Like Yakov Smirnoff says:

The radio station here bought up most of the tickets for the local show
at a greatly reduced price. They are giving them away free on the
radio as a promo. I think they stereotyped their fans a while back and
people dont like that because it's a form of bigotry.

The 23rd and Classen area is Little Asia. They have a GIANT Asian market
that has some incredible things in there, worth checking out.
As far as Bricktown, it's nice but really starting to become way over
Yuppified, like you noticed.
Don't mind the creepy looking winos, they're just the police department. 8^)

I don't have any of their CD's and Country Music isn't my taste.

Natalie Maines strikes me as beautiful.

If there's truth in the tanking for _artistic_ reasons, I couldn't care
less. One less band in a venue featuring Clint Black 'n cowboy hat

If there's truth in the tanking for continued _political_ reasons, it

Gee, was this unexpected!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rule #1. Artists should *Shut Up* and sing.

Rule #2. If you ain't selling, your music sucks.

Rich Rule #1. If they don't dance, you ain't got a chance.

Rich Opinion.

They are on their way to being canceled, due to LACK of INTEREST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why. Without musical excitement, you can smell the shit in a polished turd parade.

Why would anyone think their politics had anything to do with their lack of ticket sales.

I love this dichotomy. Artists don't have a voice, unless you're an
artistic washout like a Reagan or a Schwarzenegger.

No thats a career change and valid, Arnold was getting 20 million a
movie not exactly a "washout", Ronnie simply changed careers from union
persident to governor. they made a commitment to one career or the
other. Others try to keep one foot in each arena and dilute their
credibility in both, because most actors and musicians are working with
only a HS education and an opinion amplified by nothing more than
celebrity worship. eg. what did People magazine pay for the photo of
"bradgolinas" baby? This is why the Taliban and so much of the world
hates us, Hollywood and it's liberal out of touch values.

I listen to a lot of Country music. I had been turning off their stuff
for a year or two before the dust-up because it seemed the lead singer
was rarely on the note, and it grated on my ears. About 10-15% of the
top 30 acts I also change the channel, for similar reasons.

If Maines would have said what she did on U.S. soil, it would have been
tolerable to me. But she broke a rule by bad mouthing us overseas. Some
folks still believe there ARE rules. So Country fans complained when
their stuff was then played.

I think the "sales" are based on shipments to dealers. Since the Chicks
scored a tie-in with Target Stores, the massive numbers could be skewed
by the roll out at the stores. Also, the 25% of those who go with their
political views, or others who don't care, must be buying the product.

I saw the video on one of the national cable country channels. The tone
of the thing was quite nasty and self-indulgent. They have decided that
being political animals is their future, in A/C format land. They have
no future in Country.

I hope it does tank. Maybe the ticket price will come down. I went online to
get tickets and the nose bleeds are going for $100.00+. Too rich for me.
Still like to go though. Their new cd is pretty good. I don't know if it has
any real catchy tune but it's pure DC harmony.

Typical plaything left knee jerk.

The Ditzy Chicks have all the free speech rights the Constitution allows, to the point of them
pissing off their fan base.

Which they did.

They, like Linda Ronstadt, found out that audiences who had paid to here them sing, don't appreciate
their exercise of free speech rights, presented during a not for free, PAID artist performance.

So now, their fan base has the right and freedom to ignore them all together.

What part of pissing off your ticket paying audience, does the artist not understand.

For the same reasons, likewise yourself.

I guess then, you'd enjoy being the music industry pimp's talent less whore, as long as you get PAID
the bux.

But, when there is no longer a return for the pimp's investment, welcome the trash dumpster.

So,... shut up, and spread 'em,.... to keep the money rolling in, as long as you can.

Just look in the mirror every morning and say over and over, "I'm not a polished turd", when the
musical industry's dumpster with your name on it approaches.

Nice thought, ain't it.

You sure, you don't want to reconsider your wishes.

Cool post, thoughtful (as opposed to many comments from some other folks).

If the music is strong enough then it can survive the politics of the
artist, the day when the public would reject an artist because of any kind
of scandal seems to be over. For every fan the DC lost over their politics
they gained one who was attracted by the fuss, if their numbers are down
that much then it has to be the music no longer spinning the public's crank.

For those that don't the story about the "chicks",

I remember when the "original" band used to play at shopping mall openings,
grocery store openings, etc.

They had a station wagon with equipment hanging all over it.
That big cactus bass was on top. <<that bass is now at the CowGirl Hall of
Fame in Ft. Worth, well worth the price of admission.

Anyway, those lady's worked their asses off<< unlike loud mouth natalie
maine, & whether you like that style of music or not, they put in the time &
effort to craft their skills.<< unlike natalie maine

When they started getting recognition, up jumped the devil<< natalie maine,
spolied rotten cheerleading, conniving bitch that she is. Oh yeah, all mouth
too.

The original singer was pushed out. She had fronted the band & helped get
them to that point.

The chicks then had some real luck & success with sony nashville.

Then natalie decided since she didn't have a million $$$ in the bank<<
that's what she said in an interview, & they were suing.
She, being the brain dead airhead that she is, didn't realize that the
songwriters make the $$$$. Her$$$$ came from touring.

Sony relented gave some concessions, etc.
But low life<< natalie, now started bringing in "CO-Writers" she she could
get royalties on top of the rest.

Fast forward. What she said on stage in England was her "right"! But then to
"whine" because people objected, was pathetic. Being the spoiled brat she
is, she just didn't get it.

Now she has rubbed off on the other 2.
That interview they just did, recently was
"unfricking" believable.
Calling the fans that gave them the $$$ through record sells & concerts, to
live a real comfortable life--- Rednecks, and they really didn't care if
that type of fan came, shows just how stupid & arrogant they have become.

I have no respect for them anymore. I guess the money & short burst of fame
was just too much for them. As much hair dye as they have absorbed into
their pea brains, I'm amazed they can even remember how to play.

These 3 airheads are not representative of Texas women.

We are ashamed that they are from Texas.

End of rant

Their new CD is pretty good. IMHO. Just wish I could see them live in some
reasonably good seats. The seats I can afford would defeat the purpose of
seeing them live. Whoever said Natalie sings off key is tone deaf and I'd
verture to say not a musicain by trade.

Before they became mega-stars my wife had the opportunity to book them for
$5000 for a DMA convention. Now one ticket can go for over $800 here in
Austin.

Now I know you're not from TX.

Austin is the most un-Texas like city in Texas. Very liberal. The only two
counties that voted for Kerry were El Paso and Travis (Austin, the State
Capital, is in Travis). What's strange is most everyone hates Bush in Travis
county but go just across the county line into Williamson county and you see
Bush/Cheney bumper stickers everywhere. They're still proud as peacocks
they voted for those lying stupid assholes. So TX is a red state with a blue
heart.

I'm not liberal or conservative (I'm more of an anarchist) but I do feel
more comfortable in Travis county. Austin is where you'll find more free
thinkers hence the reason it's the live music capital of the world.

> Thank god those chicks don't whine like redneckked gitar players.

It's unfortunate Natalie took so much heat for speaking her mind. She gets
picked on for being overseas like she made the foreigners hate us. They
don't hate us because of Natalie. They hate because we've got a lying stupid
asshole for a president.

Her remark was reported in Britain and quickly picked up. Right-wing
blogs and talk shows vilified the Dixie Chicks as unpatriotic and
worse, and the Incident reached the nightly news. On March 12 a Web
site statement from Ms. Maines said: "I feel the president is ignoring
the opinion of many in the U.S. and alienating the rest of the world.
My comments were made in frustration, and one of the privileges of
being an American is you are free to voice your own point of view." On
March 14, 2003, she apologized to President Bush for being
"disrespectful" to his office, but added, "I just want to see every
possible alternative exhausted before children and American soldiers'
lives are lost."

At the Time 100 party a few days before this interview, the Dixie
Chicks performed "Not Ready to Make Nice." Afterward Ms. Maines
recounted, the Fox News commentator Bill O'Reilly - who has regularly
denounced her, and whom she pointedly calls "despicable" - rushed
over to greet them. "It's like, 'Just want to say that was great!' "
Ms. Maines said. " 'I really like that new song.' "

"And I go, 'But two million tops, right?' And he goes, 'What?' And I
said, 'I saw your show when you said we wouldn't sell more than two
million, tops.' And he was like, 'Oh, ah, well, two million's pretty
good these days, right?' And I was just like, 'Right, yeah. You were
saying it in a positive way.' "

Ms. Robison interrupted, laughing. "That's what you call a no-spin
zone."

"So then he was just backtracking," Ms. Maines continued. "He says: 'We
really respect what you did. And we really respect that you stand up
for yourself and blah blah blah. We just wish you would say it over
here.' And I said, 'I'll say it over here.' "

The complaint that she criticized the president on foreign soil has
been a talk-radio talking point. Ms. Maines dismisses it. "It wasn't
like we played 20 shows in America and I was saving up this comment for
London," she said. "I was in London when the war was about to start.
That's where I said it. I would have said it anywhere, because I didn't
think that it was a bad thing to say or a controversial thing to say."

The next day on "The O'Reilly Factor," Mr. O'Reilly acknowledged that
Ms. Maines had "chided" him. He mentioned the radio boycott but did not
endorse it. "Not Ready to Make Nice" is 'a pretty good song,' he said.
'There's no reason not to play it.'"

Some concert markets are doing well now, such as the July 25 show at
Wachovia Center in Philadelphia and the Air Canada Centre in Toronto,
where the show sold out in eight minutes.

As of the middle of last week it was the #1 most downloaded song on
iTunes.

Senator John McCain grills Cumulus CEO Lewis Dickie for banning the

Yeah, that's right, they dumped their original singer, they wanted a more
commercially-viable product and a busty blonde was just the ticket, I'd
forgotten about that.

I'd tend to agree, she has the right to speak her mind, but so do the folks
who objected to her remarks for one reason or another. If she can't stand

If they're hoping a more "progressive" audience will support them over the
long haul they might be disappointed, liberals tend to switch brands every
time a new fad comes along.

You are in ERROR, to equate musical talent and marketing talent as the same thing.

Musical talent makes for good music. Which, has not a FU_KING thing to do, with the SELLING of that
music.

The music industry,... with its selling mechanics, SELLS the musical product for profit.

So, stop posting like a jerk, and educate yourself.

You should read the book Hit Men, by Fredrick Dannen.

http://www.bookrags.com/history/popculture/album-oriented-rock-sjpc-01/

I'm not in the business of selling records.

Though, I worked closely with a record producer in the 50's and 60's, and know quite a lot about the
music selling game.

What, do you want to know.

Yes you did.

Now, think about the *marketing* talent behind that successful SELLING of the musical POLISHED TURDS
to THOSE,.. who, like YOU,... have a set of ears and a brain.

To the garden slug, Tiny Tim would seem like a musical talent, compared to Bach.

So, by your reasoning, Ashley Simpson, who has a big national tour

great blues musicians who can't get ten people to come see them.

Interesting logic, Rich.

Simple, I don't like a diet of polished turds.

And, the music industry is filled with 'em.

And, today's public is so used them, they would not know a good steak if it hit them in the face.

Musicians do nothing to change that.

The major percentage of rock musicians are musically illiterate.

The only music that rocks if punk.

And that, only goes so far.

Music TV is not a substitute for a music education to turn out knowledgeable musicians.

LIVE music is dead for most of these reasons.

Musical EXCITEMENT to get them dancing in the streets, is DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There was musical excitement for the music listener in the past. That gave birth to the original
Woodstock. No other reason than it was the first time you could see and hear the most exciting
bands of the time in one place. Till that happened, where could you go to see and hear such a
musical event.

Those bands left their mark in musical history. Most everyone here can name those bands, and
describe the the manner it influenced the music that followed too.

Now, take a hard look at the wake of Woodstock 99. Name the bands that were there, and describe how
they influenced to music that followed.

Since Woodstock 99, point something we can talk about, that advanced our music culture.

It is easier to go through the list of polished turds the music industry paraded before us.

Like that oxymoron, rap music.

So it is, with rock music.

There just is no music exciting enough in the clubs to attract and pack the clubs with the average
Joe and Jane off the streets.

People used to go to the clubs to *party* with LIVE music.

Guys used to go to the clubs to meet chicks, and there were lots of chicks in clubs years past.

THAT, is not the case today. Is it.

You want to meet chicks,.... go to the internet.

There ya go.

<thinking>

If it's all about sex, drugs, and rock n roll.

Just where does the sex part come in, for the male rock player in the clubs today.

I can tell ya for sure,... he ain't getting any from the women that ain't there in the clubs any
more.

Meeting a music slut by playing in a rock band in clubs today is only a fantasy.

In my day, it was a reality!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now if you want to meet a music slut, you have a better chance with internet dating, or joining a
swingers club, than going to a night club.

For the serious musician looking to meet good players to form a SERIOUS band, clubs are not the
place to go any longer.

LOL, again the internet offers better opportunities.

So, why bother putting a LIVE band together.

Live music is DEAD.

And again, the internet provides all the music one can want, without leaving the house.

Long live recorded music in a can.

Because he's a bitter old man. His argument is so full of holes. He's still
pissed about a comment Natalie made about his beloved semi retarded
president overseas (shudder). It has nothing to do with producers or record
companies, that's just a smoke screen to help him deal with the fact that
the DCs are actually very talented and he's just an old has been. Really
Rich deal with it. The DCs are young talented musicians. You had your day in
sun and now that day is over. Deal with it.
