Hi:
This is a homemade strat with an old Bassman amp and a Dallas Arbiter
Fuzz Face...

I tried to get many tones out of this...if there is a minute and
second with preferred tone, let me know...
We argued about this for some time...weird.

thanks,

Good fuzz is very subjective and there are plenty of players who don't
like fuzz at all. I thought it sounded pretty good but it's not the
fuzz tone I go for, I prefer fuzz to be a bit smoother. Worth noting
is that I read something about Eric Johnson auditioning tons of
different fuzzes as they tend to sound different due to different
transistors being used, less stringent screening of those transistors
depending on who builds them and, in older ones, the components drift
over time.

I think vintage effects are cool but prefer to buy clones or newer
designs - particularly when it comes to fuzz - as they tend to be
built to higher tolerances. My favorite is the Analogman Sun Face
NKT275 which is a Fuzz Face clone. It's a germanium fuzz and has a
pretty "round," smooth sound to it. Another great one is the Foxrox
Hot Silicon which is built with silicon transistors; it's brighter and
a little nastier but can also be set to sound pretty smooth similar to
the Analogman pedal.

The ones I mentioned above are available for sale over the web so you
have to listen to sound clips to get an idea of what they sound like.
I wouldn't get too hung up on the way the the EQ in the clips sound;
pay more attention to the way the fuzz is distorting.

Here's an interesting read by Dave Fox (Foxrox) about some of the
history behind the Fuzz Face:
