Hi All,

having finally *I thought* got to grips with PS5, I find myself banging my
head against a brick wall again. I am trying to convert some photos of
friends into Pop Art style. I am getting the vague effect I am looking for
by desaturating the image, playing with the levels then adjusting the
threshold. I then select the black outlines that I have created and copy and
paste them back onto a copy of the original image. Then I apply the color
halftone to the original image and tweak the levels again. This works but is
not entirely convincing. Can anyone please suggest a better method, or is
there an action / filter out there somewhere?

Any help is much appreciated,

Jon W

I do apologize if i sound mean, but don't rely on the computer so much.

Pop art wasn't done on the computer. Try doing it yourself.....it'll look
much better. Read up on pop art methods and research the subject.

You do sound mean :)

As far as I, personally, am concerned, the whole idea of photoshop is to
emulate real-world techniques on a computer, especially, in my case for
online publishing I am not a trained artist, but enjoy the lease of freedom
that a package such as Photoshop gives me. I have the type of job that
doesn't allow me the time or give me the energy to get training in
traditional arts. You may as well ask what the point of using Photoshop is
at all!!! Apart from a few processes, most things you can do in PS can be
done with a bit off effort in a studio/darkroom.

I simply asked if anyone knew a technique to recreate the feel of pop art in
PS. I don't expect comments such as yours regarding the non-use of a package
that is the subject of the NG!

While I appreciate your 'advice', it was not my question.

jon w,

my deepest apologies.

i knew right after i sent my reply, it was too harsh.

Please let me elaborate. My outlook on photoshop is that of a tool. No
different in concept than a hammer or screwdriver. I try to not let the
program run me, because i am the designer, not photoshop.

Do you start to build a house by gathering some wood, dragging out the
hammer and screwdriver, and start pounding away? No, of course not.
You first must have a plan of action and blueprints must be drawn up before
the first hammer is picked up.

Same thing with design. You want to create something that has a pop art feel
to it, but want to do it right away on the computer. This is the wrong way
to go about it. Back up a little. Go find examples of pop art, research it
a little. Then, sit down with a PENCIL and sketch out your thoughts. They
don't need to be exact or good. Do lots of these sketches, and then revise
your best sketches.
Once you have a solid idea of what you want, formulate a plan for execution
on the computer. Do you need photoshop for the job, or perhaps freehand or
illustrator? The right tool for the right job. This "method" of design gives
you options when designing, something you don't have when you start on the
computer.

You will find that using this method will not take any longer than you
normally take by sitting down in front of the computer trying to figure out
how to do something. Execution on the computer is usually the quickest part
of the process. And most likely, you would not need to post your question in
the NG, because you would of already figured out what you need to do to
recreate the pop art look.
