Painter is very good for simulating painting and other effects.
It is also capable of making animation But it is not as
versatile as Photoshop, and even though 6 shows great advances,
I think it is still not as mature a program as it could be. The
interface has improved but it could be better. Also, there are
issues with it being sold to Corel.
If it comes down to a "which one" choice, I say Photoshop hands
down.
If you have nothing better to do...

If you work with photographs, color correcting, touching up,
compositing, etc., definitely Photoshop. If you're comfortable
creating art in an nontraditional, more abstract way, then Photoshop
offers you great power. Photoshop is a better prepress tool for
professional printing.
If I had to have one, it would be PS, but it doesn't hurt to have
both.

One thing to consider is that Painter works exclusively in RGB,
so
if you are doing anything for print media you need PhotoShop
along
with Painter.
Image Ready solves the problem that Photoshop had before,
virtually NO web functionality. Maybe not as good as Painter,
but
I still say that for all around versatility, PS is the way to go.
Gads, I don't think so. It's more like Painter 6 being sold to Corel will be
the death of it. A shame, really. And nope, anything with the Corel-stamp
on it, has a long way to go to become "industry standard."

What "industry" would that be? :)
