My daughter had her school pictures taken and we bought the package. Now
she sees some of her classmates have their name/year embossed on their
wallet photos.

I would like to scan one of her larger photos and add text. Any
suggestions? I use photoshop only for the barest essentials. I know how to
do layers and text, but not some of the esoterics like raised letter typing,
etc.

The type I saw was a raised letter gold of some type.

Any help would be appreciated.

PS: I really need to get more familiar with this tool, it's just so
overwhelming

If you want just the "look" of raised or metallic type, you may want to
explore the many actions available at:
http://www.actionxchange.com/index.cfm
Or do a Google search for "photoshop gold action" or "gold type tutorial
photoshop" or some such. There are several action download sites.
If you have never used actions before, they are a piece of cake to use. Once
you have downloaded the action, you "load" it into the Photoshop actions
pallate. Type your text, highlight the action in the actions pallate, and
press the "go" button.
Here is a source for learning how to use actions.

As a studio/portrait photo...do yourself a favor and just order some
additional ones with the embossing...We just love it when someone goes to
all the trouble to come into the studio, get shot with a good medium format
camera and then scan the images to a lesser quality and totally degrade the
whole experience. If text overwhelms you...do yourself a favor and just
cough up the extra $25 for a sheet of wallets... My 2c.

Janee has a tutorial on raised gold letters at: www.myjanee.com.

If you want to just learn how the effect is done, go to your manual and read
about Filter -> Render -> Lighting Effects.

Yeah, but this was just a mass school photo-shoot.
A few minutes in Photoshop might even improve the original!

If you look at the embossed lettering, though, I think you'll see it
isn't something you can do graphically. You can put the name on, of
course. But you won't get that effect.
