My Photoshop CS3 freezes while starting, showing "Reading Preferences...". It
seems the preferences are corrupt.

I know there is a way to start PS and delete the preferences, but I forgot how
. Who can help me?
Greetings, Alex

You will receive advice from Joel to use the 'Mask' facility.
Ignore it, and simply click shft/Ctrl/Alt/S (al four keys at once)
immediately after opening Photoshop.

To reset the preferences, do this: As quickly as you can after starting
Photoshop (don't wait for the the splash screen), press and hold
<Alt><Control><Shift>, if you are on a windows system. On a Mac press
and hold <Option><Command><Shift>. A dialogue window will appear asking
to to confirm that you want to delete the current settings.

I did just that, but I consistenly was waaay too slow (my age :( ), but
eventually I succeeded! Thank you.
I find this a weak feature of CS. I remember that in the older versions (4, 5,)
there was a preference file you could delete and that was it!

you can still do it like that
just rename or delete your PRESETS folder
PS will create a new one by default if it's missing

?!!! NO!!! DON'T delete it. Or even rename it.

it's this file you want to delete 'Adobe Photoshop CS3 Prefs.psp'
You can find it in
'C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop
CS3\Adobe Photoshop CS3 Settings'

Presets have nothing to do with preferences! You will ruin your
installation.
Not very good advice, Katwoman!

That's NOT the Prefs file! Presets folders contain all kinds of stuff
you shouldn't delete.

The Prefs file can still be deleted by hand, but the newer method is in
fact easier than plowing thru the Finder or Explorer for it.

Sorry Alex, like pointed out, 3 keys is what should be used.
Shft/Ctrl/Alt. I addded the 4th one, wondering mind, because
I was busy preparing photos for the web, and the 4 keys is what
I use therefore. Anyway the 4 would have worked for what you
needed it for, as well:-)

No, the '3finger salute' like Mike Russel love calling it,
is the fastest and it is most simple. Alex said he is slow,
but it's more a case of being used to the movement.
