When I open a file or close a file in Photoshop a lot of times it
takes a lot of time and I get the message "Writing Photoshop Format".
Is there a setting that is causing this or a setting that I can set to
prevent this from occurring so that the file closes faster or is it
necessary and not preventable?

flatten the image before saving and it will save to the the original file.

This is probably due to your preference settings. If you have turned on
'Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility' in the preferences, Photoshop
will render a flat full size preview of your layered files. If you never
open these files with any other application than Photoshop, it's a
useless option that only increases the saving time and the file size.

Thanks guys you both as usual hit the nail on the head. I made the
changes and now it saves and opens much faster.
