Dear club-goers, promoters, DJs and mucisians:

Please remember that the success of a recurring venture and the
likelihood that you'll be able to do it again next month and next year
depends far less on the number of people dancing and far more on the
number of people drinking. The cranky old soaks in the corner with the
earplugs in and the unfashionable outfits, playing cards around a stack
of empty glasses, are doing more to support your scene than any street
team you can assemble. So turn the music down until a conversation can
be heard over it in at least half the establishment. Especially the half
with the bar.

Oh, so true. Strange as it may sound, lots of people go to clubs to, gasp,
*socialize*. Which means verbal communication. Which means being able to
talk without going hoarse after 10 minutes of "WHAT?"....

"cranky old soak" who also likes to dance

For sure :) My usual problem is that I work so early that the daily goth nights we have in Portland mean I don't get a chance to get out :(

I'm there with you... that's why I'm still a big fan of those clubs that
either don't play stuff at a ear-bleeding level or have a chill-out area of
some sort. I go to socialize _and_ dance. It's almost impossible to do both
at most places.

Then again, I'm probably not the target audience since more than half the
folks at the clubs are there to take someone home. Conversation gets in the
way.

So when I went on a two-week holiday to the UK, I spent two nights in a
hotel in London, an 8-day cottage rental for the Spring Whitby-Gothic
Weekend, and 2 nights in Jennie's flat. On one of those last nights, I
followed Potatojunket to a club night. It took a lot of What? to get to
the point where I could understand what a drunk guy at the club was
saying and turn him down to the idea of following him home. Whole
interaction should have taken less than a minute, but the place was
louder than some of the noise shows I've been to since then.

I think it was after the club closed that I had the most meaningful new
interaction on the sidewalk with the guy who learned New England
geography because of H.P. Lovecraft.
