I hate parties.
I despise them.
I refuse to smoke pot and drink cheap beer to enjoy myself with people
who only barely tolerate me because they've known me for so long.
I went to the party, yes, and I went with My Dear Friend. I had fun
at first, but then, I became upset for some reason, and I didn't know
why. Then it hit me.
I was upset because I was *there*.
And you know what I hate? Not being able to be
quiet for 5 minutes without people either shoving beer in my face,
asking me what's wrong, and trying to get me to open up.
I can't help it. I can't be perky all the time. It's been a hellish
past two weeks, and I'm in a pisser mood.
I walked around the apartment complex. I went for a ride.
I really truly hate parties.
I rounded up My Dear Friend, and we went to the local bar. It started
raining. Heavily. It was beautiful. We arrived to the bar (ever seen
a drowned goth trying to look dignified? it's quite amusing, truly)
Everything was surreal. I sat there, talking to various companions.
I tried to cover myself: I feel truly exposed in a corset (I never
show flesh, and I hated having some males talk to my chest instead
of my face). I kept pulling my velvet jacket over my chest.
I sat outside and talked to my friend about love and life eternal.
We went to Subway. I was stared at. He was stared at.
It was then I realized the complete surrealism of the night: We
were a study in contrast. He male, I female. He in all light colours,
white shirt, jeans, me in darkness, with black hair hanging over my
face. I loved him then, for being there with me. For ignoring the
stares some of my friends feel too strongly when they're with me, and
I'm all 'decked out' or 'gothed out', as they say. I've had them
complain, ask me to dress 'down', whatever that means.
It had stopped raining. The streets glistened like pale concrete
rivers. I drove him home.

I agree that surrealism is often not sublime, at least at certain times.

Lately I've been too busy to keep my hair dyed and cropped as short as
I'd like. It had grown out and I looked, except for my clothing,
completely normal - my son (who's nine) even commented on how strange it
was. Yesterday, I had to take CS to the doctor's office for an early
morning visit. WAY too early for me to get properly dressed. So off we go,
and upon arrival, she shuttles into the cell of doctoral delights while I
bide my time in the waiting room. Suddenly, I felt that something was
wrong. It began as we entered the building, but in the waiting room it's
worse; it was a nagging feeling, like a warm cloth being wound around my
head. I sat there uncomfortably for a while, then got up to look out the
window. It was like walking on the moon, something was definitely NOT
right. Looking about I felt as though my soul had been lost, like I was an
ant in a huge machine that knew no end. The entire scene took on a skewed
and sinister aspect.

Then it hit me, I was absorbed. I was one of _them_. There was no sense
of the heightened self-imposed distance that they usually placed between
us - no barrier of guarded glances and fortified body language. THAT was
what had been bothing me. From the cows in their ugly polyester behind the
receptionists desk to the stupid shrill-voiced women with altogether too
many children, I was accepted as one of them - as part of their tribe. It
was depressing and made me angry at myself at the same time.

Last night I dyed my hair black again.

I've had similar experiences... I too hate parties... And I too
appreciate the surrealism of an evening out with my "other" friends..
especially the ones that never seem to notice that I never wear blue
jeans.

Often all it takes is one person to balance out all the bad stuff. When you
find that person, treat them well and hold on to them, they are more valuable
than anything else. If I have one real friend with me, I can stand nearly
anything. I am lucky to have several such friends, and someone very special in
my life right now...

OK.. You proved in another thread that you were a stupid asshole. Now,
you've proved that you are a stupid *and* petty asshole. What did
Twilight ever do to you? It seems like you are targeting her for some
reason. Even if you are not, she has done nothing to warrant your petty
insults. Twilight can call her experiences anything she damn well
pleases. Last time I checked, 'surreal' was an adjective. Art from the
'surrealist movement' is surreal. However, Surrealist art is not the only
thing that can be surreal. Obviously, Twilight felt her experience
as surreal, transcending reality. Anyway, that's all for my attempt to
reason with you. Now kindly fuck off.

I declare open season on rude morons.
Number 6, number 6? Is that you?
The word surreal does not appear in my oed; however, surrealism is
defined as, 'A form of art in which an attempt is made to represent the
phenomena of dreams and _similar_ experiences.' I think it is safe to
say that while surrealism may be dead as a movment, surrealism is still
be practised. I think it also fair to say that the word surreal has
altered itself within our language to indicate not only products of
surreal art, but any dreamlike experience.

I think you might believe that you are coming across as somehow
superior in knowledge. I promise you that you are only appearing to be
an incredibly priggish fuck.

I don't recall her defining surreal for us Skippy. Nor do I remember her
using the term "surrealism". I *do* however, see an asshole attempting to
flay someone on an intellectual level when he doesn't even have the mental
equipment climb onto the playing field.

>Surrealism isn't even an *is*, it's a was.

Ever hear of the term "adjective"?

[Pssst, BTW my dear vacuous genius, surreal and surrealism aren't the same
words. Each has it's own meaning all to it's self. Strange, but true.
Don't go by my word though, look in the dictionary if you have to; you
know, that book with all the word definitions in it. Borrow one if
necessary.]

This above is either:
A. An extremely lame attempt to cover your ass in the event that
someone tried to flame you for your destruction of the english language.
[A plan which I believe is beyond your capabilities - and besides,
everyone knows that butchering the language is _my_ job]
-or-
B. An indication that one of your thoughts had actually traveled far
enough to hit a convolution in your brain (of which I can only guess there
are a limited number) and was stuck there screaming for a clue to come
along and save it. [This one gets my vote]

Is this from the experience of your parents saying:
"I can't believe we gave birth to this f**king stupid kid."
"Yeah, it's trippy, weird, and not a little bit spooky."
"I know what you mean, it's kinda surreal, him being such a master of
social grace and all." <both parents snicker at this point>

Straight from the mouth of Dali, right?

>It's stupid and trippy.

Wait, stop, don't tell me: you decided this after finding in his trash a
rejected copy of "Still Life with Blown Open Corset and Beans," right?

>So, before we attempt to liken ourselves to dead art movements, let's at

You mean, she should have an experience in which incongruous
juxtapositions somehow mirror the workings of the mass subconcious before
she labels it surreal? Funny how I remember her post being just that.

[Methinks you need to wipe all those bovine turds from your eyes and
reread her post. Then, if you believe you really must post something like
this again, buy some plugs to keep what's left of you brain from leaking
out before you do; you might find 'em handy. Oh, and check out that
dictionary thing while you're at it.]

Surrealism. The feeling or styling that something isn't correct.

evaluation:-

Twilight found something to be surreal to her. You haven't a
clue as to what surrealism is, and think it's just a bunch of painters.
THere's a hell of a lot more than that. Get a clue.
Twilight encountered surrealism in her mind because something
was not as it usually is in the world around her.

The dreams and similar experiences definition only represents a small faction
of Surrealism.

Consider Matta, Arp, Ernst and Miro {to name a few}

The subconscious, fantasy, changing ones perspective on the world in order
to see it more clearly... see automatic drawing, grattage, frottage, drugs,
stream of consciousness, the exquisite corpse and hitting ones self on the
back of the head with a loaf of French bread. Surrealism has much to do with
tracing the process of thought... irritating one's creative processes and
bringing up truths from the depths of one's subconscious.

There is a link to one of Bretons manuscripts on my arts page.

Agreed.
With computers... 3d worlds and photocollage, etc... Surrealism is
going quite strongly. I'd consider most computer art to be Surreal.

I didn't see the original on this... I'd question the use of the word
"sublime" though. Surrealist imagery fits one of it's definitions very
precisely.
