I used to own a similar model. It kept decent time but was far too large
and clunky so I got rid of it and used the cash to pay for a large chunk of
my tuition for that semester.
Not my thing, generally. I don't go in for oversized and shiny. I'm more
of a Lauren kinda girl than Sean Jean.

Well thanks, but they weren't trite insults, just accurate labeling.
For example, calling Bruce a "turkey fucker" is not an insult, but an
accurate disposition of Bruce's reality. He actually believes that sex
with natural turkeys is just as real as having sex with natural women.

Truth is, most people don't.
Oh, they might know what "trendy" is, and understand the rudimentary
basics (clash versus coordinate vs contrast in colour selection, and
the very basic "horizonatal stripes widen, vertical stripes elongate")
but they very rarely know *why* that is. What they know is that it's
what their latest Fashion Update said was "in" this week and that
it's similar enough to what Everyone Else is wearing without looking
ripped of.
This is why the folks who *do* know style are paid to write the
Fashion Updates and act as consultants. And why Stacy and Clinton
will never run out of material for their little show.

I think Rolexes best marketing move was to market to people who couldn't
afford their watches. Ask anybody who will reasonably never have the
money to buy a $5000 watch to name their favorite luxury watch brand
and most of them will no doubt say Rolex. Thus anybody buying a Rolex
will not only get a reasonably nice watch, they'll be getting a brand
that will impress everybody around them.
Paradoxically Rolex actually has fairly low starting price point, meaning
that almost anyone with a full time job and who really wants Rolex can
afford one. So they have a brand that a) everybody equates with style
and finds really impressive and b) is actually quite affordable. You
cannot really argue with marketing like that. Compare this with, for
example, Lamborghini.
I mean there are plenty of other watchmakers out there that make watches
that are (at least in my opinion) much nicer and certainly much more
expensive. But telling the average person that you're wearing a Rolex
will generally impress them much more than telling them you're wearing
an IWC or Breguet.

than the quality of the actual product. I'm not a watch afficianado since I
tend to break them, so I wouldn't spend money on a watch at all. My

I have a fetish for one particular brand of luxury car, but even with that,
I wouldn't pay for a new model - although I might reconsider that stance now
that the unholy alliance between Daimler and Chrysler has been happily
severed. Aside from the fact that late models don't even look like Mercedes
Benzes anymore, if I wanted a Chrysler engine (which I DON'T), I sure as
hell wouldn't pay that much for one. I adored my '75 450SEL. Body was an
absolute POS, but the engine ... ah the engine... I finally took Dogbert
off the road when the body just quit, to the spectacle of sparks flying up
from the road as one of the passenger seat mounts (with me in said seat)
rotted through the floorboard. I still cried like a baby when they towed
the car out of the driveway. Alas, there's not much you can do to repair a
rotted unibody.
I don't do sports cars at all because why pay that much money for an engine
that can and should be driven at speed when you don't have the opportunity
to use the engineering the way that it was meant to be used? Nothing annoys
me more than to see the fat, white, bald, old guy driving a finely tuned
machine 30 mph in a 65 zone with his left blinker on. Seriously, dude,
you're not impressing me and your engine is not compensating for the fact
that the Viagra still hasn't kicked in. About the only reaction you're
going to get out of me is "Sorry about your penis."

I'm fond of Movados. Don't know how they are quality wise (although I'd
find out if I were going to buy one), but they're gorgeous.

Yes I agree with all that, if you know about watches you wouldn't
buy a Rolex. If you want to impress someone on the street you'd buy a Rolex.
I used to think of Wendy's as the high end fast food 'restrurant'.
Not that I went there to impress anyone, but they did have better mirrors
in the toilets
