So.... since so very few of use still read the One True alt.gothic... where
have all the bats flown? As I understand, there's lots of action on fazebok,
some on tumblr, and some at ???. Even most of the venerable old mailing
lists have gone silent (and dusty). Is it just the confusion in the minds of
so many that faceboek -is- "the internet", as happened before with aol,
myspace, prodigy, etc etc? What are people doing? I really don't want to
deal with fzsebuk....

It's finite time. Only so much of the day can be wasted frittering
around on the 'Tubes, and when the FaceSpace demands a certain amount of
participation (since one's grandmother and cousins are on it, instead of
remaining blissfully ignorant of all things computer), something's gotta
give. And that "something" is everything else.

I think I'll just second this. I've even considered getting a
facebook-account just to see if I could find some of the alt.gothic
people I miss.

And incase someone has missed me: Hi! Been busy having babies. Sorry
about that. Will be back in full operation again in 10-15 years.

Also older and poorer and with less free time in general.

(I still stick my nose in once every... six months or so.)

I've wondered the same thing and I haven't heard a good answer. For the
Facespaces, you have to know what folks' real names are (which I never do)
to track then down, and then there's the dilemma of "is this person
actually my friend?" Groups in fb don't really facilitate conversation at
all (and is spectacularly bad at it with the lack of threading, etc.). I
really miss a.g. and email lists.

Faceplace, or just had life et 'em.

Some people always did post under their real names. Other use
recognizable variarions on the the blue site. It kinda sorts out.

It pretty much comes down to a combination of employment, kids, local friend/social time, family, etc. I once had the time to take part in a nearly infinite number of threads; however, these days I have fallen prey to the "social network of the moment" as a quick, efficient method of catching up or keeping track of people.

I miss it, especially on days like today when someone or something rekindles memories of the old days on a.g. Still, one only has so much time in the course of a day. It's easier for me to Facecrack it, which, yes, is a sad state of affairs.

There's no "reshare" or "like" button on USENET, is there? I think
that's one of the reasons I cling to it. One actually has to compose a
response, regardless of how tangential or incoherant it may be...

Has someone put together a Face Bookston version of the group up? If not, would it be a good idea?

Karaaaaaa. Me, I missed you! Was at Whitby and mentioned you. Have
been considering wandering over your way as part of kest world tour 2013
as well.

I have pondered various forms of fixing this problem from time to time.
From some online forum page somewhere to creating the next FB, but
nothing's really promising. Because the benefit of FB really is that
(nearly) everyone is on it, despite it being shit.

But who are you on facecrack, that's the problem. I've been really good
at ferreting out people's real (or at least fb) names, but I don't think
I know yours.

Nearly everyone has email, too, but most of the announce lists have died.
You'd think that promoters would want to get as much exposure as
possible....then they set up their event's only info on a fb-only page...

There is the core question of where someone wants to drive people. And
energy on the part of those running their things about where they want
to do their stuff. Facebook does set the amount of work very, very low
if someone doesn't want to do a whole lot.

Personally, I think it's barely lower than USENET, but I'm probably
going to be riding that hobbyhorse until I die, so weight that opinion
how you like...

I'd like to see you again sometime too. Nice to know I'm not completely
forgotten. Please do drop by if you are in the neighbourhood! We even
have an extra room. I know Dag would like to see you too. I'm aiming
for Whitby April 2014 if nothing else.

I check my facebook daily, update in extended spurts, and occasionally
see other people's posts.

I fall behind on livejournal for several months and then binge catch-up.

Then I bing catch-up on USENET.

Since late August, I've been in college and having a social life on the
VT campus that I barely step foot off of. When I go to most official
events, attend several clubs (at least when they exist and don't fall
apart from low attendance(1)) and do homework, that tends to sop a good
chunk of time. Since I'm only taking one class during Summer Session
I, I might have time to not fall behind on LJ and USENET.

Then I go home and try to see some of my offline, local peoples.

(1)(So guess who has Jewish ancestors, but wasn't raised Jewish, and
still ended-up student leader for Hillel next year? Partially because
of the low attendance of clubs.)

I'm the exact opposite. I still love LJ (although I've been crap about
updating mine lately for lack of time); there's real content there. I'll
check LJ pretty much daily, but FB gets checked whenever I have nothing
else to do.

> Then I bing catch-up on USENET.

Yes. This. Thus my binge catch-up tonight.

I really miss the mail lists since email is still the main way I
communicate. Even though it's considered antiquated now, I do like the One
Inbox of Truth(tm) that contains everything that I want to deal
with/respond to. I hate going to Facebook to look at things there,
Livejournal for stuff there, various other boards for other things, etc.
Email & USENET still work best for me - especially since I get to most
everything via the command line when ssh'd to my home machine. Lynx +
Facebook just don't mix.
