How sharp are quill pens?  Must not be TOO sharp, to navigate the
far-less-smooth and far-more-fragile stuff they had to write on, back then.

Perhaps a simile from a recent century might be more effective?  But the
time's running out on "really, really sharp pencils," so you'd better hurry.
