<snippered stuff>
There's one teensy thing which bothers me about this.
Since when was disfigurement, ugliness and malformation considered to be
"gothic" in the first place?
<disclaimer>
Now, I know I'm the new gal around here and I certainly don't mean to step on
anyone's toes with this post (this is discussion, not attack) - but this is just
one of a few references I've come across recently as to this sort of
grotesqueness being somehow "gothic" in nature.
</disclaimer>
If so, it's new to me.
When I was very young, I didn't know that there was a name for the way I felt -
but with hindsight, I seem to have been either born gothic or made into one
rather rapidly. In all my years of following a darker path, I've never once
considered the sort of thing this website depicts to be in the least bit gothic,
never mind excessively so.
Of course, we may all have differing opinions on "gothicism" (?) but to me and
those I've known, it's always been a path where one feels more at home in the
shadows and the darkness rather than the light. It's an appreciation for
ancient and dark things, a more rational understanding and appreciation of death
and finding either beauty or worth in the things other people see as being
ghoulish and macabre.
But repulsive, stomach wrenching and horrific? That's not me at all and it
isn't what I've always understood being gothic to be about either. I have
never considered myself to be a romantic - but I suppose there is a lot of
romanticism in being gothic. However, my realistic gene is well present and
this is my point. Isn't this sort of thing more *realistic* (i.e. - there is
ugliness and deformation out there - accept it) rather than *gothic*?
Now, I know that when I'm in a graveyard, there are rotting, decaying,
worm-eaten corpses lying beneath the stones and I accept that - that's my
realism surfacing, not my gothicness (??) but it doesn't take away from the
peace I feel being around the dead. Shit like this is out there. Death is
mostly ugly, it's true. But in all death, there is beauty if you look at it
from a different perspective - that's what being gothic means to me. Being able
to find and exercise that different perspective in a world gone (supposedly)
sane. ;)
Now, I'm not saying "I'm right, you're wrong" (perish the thought) - just "this
is how I see it" and I'm rather confused at this trend to lump everything ugly
and malformed in with being gothic.
I detest labels. It took me long enough to accept this "gothic" one for myself
but I know that certain labels are necessary. So, it concerns me that this name
I've taken to describe my life is somehow being rewritten.
Anyway, these are just my personal thoughts on the matter. YMMV. If there is a
section of the goth community which thinks differently, my mind is (mostly)
open. Please educate me. ;)

Ah...in that case, I appreciate the humour. ;)
Nevertheless, to some people it isn't humour. Some people really do think we
goth-types salivate over rotting cadavers et al - and some people take the name
"goth" in order to do it - which is what sparked my recent concerns and post.
I'm very pleased it was a joke - for two reasons. Firstly, I'm vastly relieved
to find some goths who are still goths and secondly, I'm glad I'm not alone in
the sick humour stakes. ;)
Still, I'd be fascinated to know if there are any "goth equals grotesque" people
out there and why they think the way they do.
Sick jokes notwithstanding.....
btw - I don't think the subject of the website would have made a very good goth
anyway. She wasn't wearing an ankh. ;)
My apologies, Nebar. Really and truly, I wasn't having a go - just wanted to
know if people here really believed that stuff.....and it's just that your post
came after a few recent incidents where people claiming to be of a gothic
persuasion have cited a preference for the actual presence in their homes for
decaying corpses. Enough to put you off your Worm Casserole.....
Live and let live, I say - but think of the smell! Not to mention the
neighbours..... ;)

this seems like a good time to re-post the url to
a song i made recently called 'come rotten my love'.
it's more or less about two corpses having sex.
it's a cappella!

Hmmm, you know, I might have an old 386 around with one of them in... I
don't think it was connected to the motherboard... (but I'm too lazy
to drag the box off the shelf, find a screwdriver and work out whether
I have right now or not... What do you need it for, and is ISA OK?)

Mmm, milk.

What a glorious dose of surrealism... And I don't think I've
drunk milk on its own for, ooooh, ages... :)
BTW, just to round off this particularly dull and otherwise
unremarkable post (yes, indeed, sometimes just talking to
ourselves), I'm going to suggest some reading material for
everybody... Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk. Yeah, I know,
I only bought it after I'd seen the film - but it's still
absolutely fantastic (that counts for both film and book)...
But anyway, it's not just about a bunch of blokes fighting,
in case you were wondering...
Um, yeah.
So ends my public service announcement. :)

A day without sunshine is like, night.
Have you ever seen our "got milk" commercials? some of them are really
precious. meself? I prefer a little chocolate :)
~ Sandy ~
Hmmm... Basically, it's about this bloke who
starts off with insomnia - and he discovers that if he goes to a
support group (cancer, brain parasites, etc. sort of group), and
he cries, he can fall asleep. But a spanner appears - another
person starts doing the same... Anyway, to cut a long story
short (and avoid ruining the book too much) he sort of goes
slowly insane. But in a fantastically cool way, and with explosives.
It's just great - go. read. :)
> Have you ever seen our "got milk" commercials? some of them are really

No, I've never actually seen one of them (well, I might have seen *one*
of them but that's about it). But I know about them - mainly from the
various piss-takes around :)
> I prefer a little chocolate :)
MMmmmmmmmmmmmmm, chocolate...
I should have had some of that trifle.
Er.
Yeah.
MMmmmmmmmmmmmm, trifle...

I definitely will. explosives YEAH!. I have one for you...Piercing the
Darkness, Undercover with Vampires in today's America by Katherine
Ramsland.
I'm into it up to a point. I don't have to tell anyone here how careful
we have to be in regards to sharing other peoples' blood.

Mini-spitting? You were spitting *me*???

- Confused.
Now, now, you know I didn't mean that :)
But yeah, I meant that I remember Don coming back and making a couple of
rude posts and then leaving, not months of solid trench warfare :)

Suicide? Why that's the last thing I'd do.
Mmmm, so that's like a textbook or something? Paper documentary... Rather
than fiction?

*groan*. :D
But yeah, not my thing - vampirism. Blood has always just been a nuisance
for me (always (used to, fingers crossed) have nosebleeds).
