OK, we have a poll on sheets--since we're being domestic, how about
dinnerware & glassware?

I like chunky stoneware items that have a hint of being handmade
(quite apart from anything else, they can survive my clumsy
dishwashing). Though most of my favorites are one-offs I will
restrict myself to describing sets of things. To be inconsistent, I
also own some delicate china straight out of Victoria magazine, the
kind of thing that makes you want to dress up in bloomers and bake
scones to serve with tea.

I want to get new dinnerware--in fact I'm lusting after the glossy,
poppy red ones from Pier/Pier1 that are completely plain, no design,
made in Spain. They look like fresh nail polish.
http://www.pier.co.uk/ ref 1699783 (for example).

Can't afford, so am looking for primary red dishes elsewhere, but no
luck so far.

What we've found instead:
Both Argos & Asda carry a set of crockery that is heavy cream matte
stoneware, with geometric, slightly retro plates (concave squares with
rounded corners). I may settle for this--probably from Asda because I
don't really need more mugs. www.argos.co.uk item 800/4620 for
pictures. It's quite nice & heavy. The Argos ones also do serving
platters & tea set. Mmmm! I really may end up buying this. It's
unusual, but neutral enough I won't get sick of it.

Our *current* plates/bowls/saucers are charity shop castoffs, thin,
slightly translucent bright glossy white glass dishes with a frilly
edge. We also have a zoo of mismatched mugs (which my husband has
sentimental attachments to) and various clear cylindrical drinking
glasses (cheap & easy to replace, as we break them continually).

At home, I had stoneware with a bold floral "hand painted" design of
lemon yellow, cobalt blue, and spruce green (I bought these in high
school, and even though they weren't my style anymore, I used them
when I finally did move away from home). With this I had heavy,
chunky, stepped spruce green glassware. This was all from Wal-Mart.
And it made me happy in the mornings because it was all very perky.

Also, years ago when I was engaged I was given a metric shitload of
dishes/bowls/platters for birthdays, Christmas, etc. Which I couldn't
take with me to the UK when I actually got married! Most of this is
clear glassware; some items have spruce green touches or are made of
green "antique" glass.

I also have (in my parents' attic) a massive set of Haviland china in
the "Forever Spring" pattern. It's white with various pale spring
colours, rimmed in silver. I have also some pale plum wine glasses
that go with. It's nice, though it was all bought at BIG LOTS (aka
Pic'n'Save aka MacFrugals). You really never do know what you'll find
there! For pattern:
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1260959389

Before the china, also now anguishing in the attic, I had a mismatched
yet charming array of various bone china teacups &
saucers/teapot/creamer etc. for serving tea to guests.

It's funny because when I was a little kid, I always wanted to use the
black plate (my gran had a lot of mismatched china, of which three
plates were black with a grey-marble border) but now that I'm grown
(and especially now that I live in a hard-water area) I don't really
care for black dinnerware. I'd prefer to have, say, a bold or dark
colored tablecloth and light crockery, or a set of bright
primary-colored dishes with white linens.

Whew! Soooo, anyone else?

Dinnerware.

I have a pile of lovely plates and everything with sunflowers on em- which I
dont really like- but at least they match.
We have a stonewear set that's an off white with a black band- but my fave is
the cobalt blue glass- I have a few of those nifty antique colonial style
pieces- the ones that have the colonial people on them? None match, however.

What a coincidence that when Jay and I moved in together that our
dishes matched! We both had black glossy ceramic. He had three of
everything (since he was an only child and was used to 3s, and I had 4
of everything since I'm from a family of 4 I suppose and am used to
that). They don't match perfectly but they are pretty darned similar.

We've got olive brown martini glasses (4)
two white wine glasses and 4 red wine glasses (it was 4 and 4, but you
know how it goes)
And for a housewarming gift my pal Kat got me some gorrrregous water
glasses - they are blue and purple enameled glass! They're so cool!
Holographic almost and a beautiful cascasding organic shape to them.
We have tons of mugs most of them with some sort of logo on them! the
ones I designed for a U of T student leadership conference I organized
for the school, some from my old employer and some of my old
employer's suppliers.
Two margarita glasses with stems shaped like cacti ;-)

well, my china is blue willow. not an expensive blue willow, but a
blue willow nonetheless. i forget who makes the set i have; my mother
buys it for me in a department store in chicago. (it looks almost
*eactly * like the ones at
http://www.bluewillowchina.com/dinnerware.html except my teacup is
shaped differently). i also have lidded coffee mugs in blue willow
that i picked up at pier one at least ten years ago.

to go with it, i have cobalt stuff from target. a big salad bowl,
cereal bowls, stuff like that.

my wine glasses are mikasa "french countryside":
http://www.ross-simons.com/perl/m_shopping.cgi?ITEM=MKXFCS

the glasses are rather more formal than the china, but i've never had
need for formal china.

When I graduated from college my hope(less) chest was half full of Mikasa
dinnerware in the tango pattern. Black with sorta fluted edges and
purpley/plum flowers.

Once I got married to (my now ex) husband I stopped using those (cause he
was a klutz) and we got the black octagon dinnerware that was typical at
Target and other cheepo type stores.

I have long given up on having cool looking black dishes (damn do they show
smudges and finger prints) and am now using plates that match my cobalt blue
and glossy white kitchen.
The dinnerware is from Crate n Barrel and they are white with "international
symbols" in the middle of the piece (i.e. the dinner plate has a knife and
fork in white on a blue background, small plate has one fork, bowl has a
spoon).
Even my drinking tumblers have the same sort of logo decoration.

I copied my friend, Audrey who is one of those uber cool 60 year olds that
were discussed in a thread a couple months ago. She has the greatest
taste. I could go on and on about her huge artists loft and the way she
has it decorated, but I'll skip to the dishes. Despite her large income,
she bought all of her china, silver, tea cups, and wine glasses at various
thrift stores. Mismatching them on purpose. It's a great eclectic look.
Mind you, there's no stone wear mixed in, or souvenir plates from Wyoming.
It's all floofy china.

I tried to imitate and there by garner some of her coolness, but I guess
I'm a little too rigid. I ended up with white china with a white flower
design around the border and also a thin silver band, salad plates and
bowls, all from different thrift stores, yet some how matching exactly.
Must have been a popular pattern at some time. My silverware, however is
mismatched, so that's a step in the direction I was hoping for.

In other dish news, I have two sets of Target plates, one set with a black
and white border, one set with a red picasso-esque border, and a set of
purple dishes from the 99 cent store. We have lots of those standard 80's
wine glasses, clear with a black stem, from which I drink all beverages. I
gave up wine, but guess I missed the glass.

I do have a lot of cobalt serving dishes from Macy's, that I love, but
rarely get to use.

Weird...I have bought two sets of matching dinnerware( one white w/ blue and
pink flowers, one off-white with blue rims, both heavy stoneware), yet have
never owned a matching set longer than two weeks. Stuff gets broken, lent
to neighbors with homemade goodies attached and never returns, or comes to
us on the same basis----plus it seems like my sink eats matching dishes like
the proverbial washing machine does socks---sometimes I just don't know
where they go. I cannot at any time in my childhood or present life
remember having a matching set of silverware, except one ugle
plastic-handled cheapie set from Wal-mart, which went the same way as the
dinnerware described above. Of course, we don't own a dining table,
either( no room), so I guess that could have something to do with it---if
everyone's eating on trays on the porch, it gives less incentive to own a
fancy matching set. Sometimes I think it'd be nice to have something
elegant like that, though, but I think it's just not my fate.

Hm....Wedgwood is my current obsession so far as china goes (in red
transferware!)--however, given my impecunious student state, that'll
have to wait :)

Almost all of my dishes were, er....'liberated' from my parents'
former restaurant (*sigh*.) They're the standard, ubiquitous blue
patterned plates you see at every Chinese restaurant. My friends
think it's terribly funny whenever they eat off of them.
My bowls were all purchased from Mitsuwa market in Edgewater,
NJ--they're Japanese porcelain bowls with a blue and white abstract
flower pattern on them. I love them and use them constantly. They
also have a huge selection of tiny 'condiment' plates and chawanmushi
bowls that I Must Have, as well as this fascinating, and yet
disgusting looking sushi replica clock.

Most of our fork/knives/spoons were lifted from the cafeteria, but I
swear, I'll return them when I graduate.

I don't own glasses....I'm not sure why. And now, I'm not sure where
I've put all my mugs.

Wow...this poll made me realize I should probably go do the dishes now
:)

Since our wedding, our kitchen cabinets have overflowed w/lovely gothic
dinnerware! We ditched our old hand-me-down cheapo crap -- it was all
mismatched ugly '70s dinnerware in white & avacado green.

Now we have several everyday dinnerware sets. One is black matte stoneware
from Target w/really big cereal bowls & big deep saucer-like dinner plates.
Another is red glass from Target, 2 sizes of plates plus very tiny bowls
that are perfect for one scoop of ice cream. Both these are very plain &
simple & sturdy.

The other casual set is a freebie -- complimentary w/a 5 nite stay at the
resort in Jamaica where we spent our honeymoon. It's Royal Doulton in
Vintage Grape -- white heavy plates in 2 sizes & flat-lipped bowls, all w/a
pattern of orangish/brownish grape bunches & dark green leaves. Has a kinda
"fall in the 1940s" look to it that I like.

Then there's our formal china. It's Royal Albert in Old Country Roses. My
mom's been buying this pattern for me since college. It's very exuberant.
Red, pink, & yellow roses on white bone china w/gold edges. Very, very, very
frou-frou. It pretty much defines the term "frou-frou" to me. I love it! I'd
already had the tea set & 4 place settings, & we received a ton more place
settings as wedding gifts. Someday we'll get some serving ware too.

Right now, half our serving ware is wedding gift pewter & silverplate & the
other half is Goodwill pewter & silverplate. They're rather
indestinguishable (which makes sense if you remember that all that stuff at
Goodwill was just s'one else's wedding gift that they didn't like; this is
why I'm a huge fan or wedding registries ;-)

I always have a ton of platters & large serving bowls for parties. Even if
you just serve chips & dip, it looks like you put effort into it if yr
serving it out of crystal & silver.

All our drinking glasses are the cheap but fancy looking Longchamps brand
from Target. I adore these. They look & feel like lead crystal, but cost
pennies. Plus, Target's had this brand for at least 5 yrs now, so they're
easy to replace if they get broken. Heh, & I saw them using the very same
glasses on "The West Wing" recently.

fun poll!

mine are a purposeful mishmash, and everything looks good
together, since it's mostly in shades of blues and purples.

i have
- cobalt blue glass dinner plates (Pier One)

- cobalt blue glass saucers (Bed Bath & Beyond)

- purple glass salad plates (Target)

- Pier One dinner plates with a royal blue & green fresco
pattern - i love these!

- deep square bowls from Pier One that are lavender outside
and pale blue inside

- amazing soup bowls from Pier One that are kind of an oatmeal
colored craquelure with gradients of blue and black around the
top edge. i could only get 3 of these before the store sold
out. :<

- purple glass tumblers from Target

- clear glass guiness glasses

- clear wine glasses with black stems (I think these were from
a dollar store!)

- cobalt blue glass mugs

- cobalt blue tumblers with celestial patterns (Marshalls)

- my beloved Disney Malnificent mug & my agf mug!

- a glass that I found at a thrift store once. it looks like
it's from the 50s or 60s set, and it's faded cornflower blue
printed onto clear glass. and it's all Egyptian portraits and
symbols and hieroglyphs and such. quite possibly this was the
best 50 cents i ever spent.

Trystan, stop being like me. :P (Well, except I haven't done the
wedding part.)

For years, my dinnerware was '70s Mikasa stuff that my mother had and
that she shed after her second wedding (because *he* was all into
blue-and-brown Pfaltzgraff stoneware, ugh). White with an
abstract/geometric pattern of avocado green and robin's-egg blue, with
black crosshatches. Totally, totally '70s. I still have 6 full place
settings plus servingware and I'm sure they're worth something, but I
haven't found a dealer yet.

I bought new dishes almost three years ago. I happened to see this
stuff in the Barron's catalog (http://www.barronsdinnerware.com/ ) and
fell in love, and the price was good. It's black stoneware from Sasaki
with a matte finish, though the edges were left unglazed. Every piece
is absolutely smooth--no edges or lips and only the curves needed to
hold the shape. It's very Japanese and I just *love* it.

Buying this stuff made me decide I was gonna go for a minimalist, bold
Japanese/Art Deco theme for my dining and kitchenware. All my kitchen
stuff is (or is becoming, as I slowly replace pieces) matte black,
cobalt glass, and chrome/shiny stainless steel.

In addition to the matte black stoneware, I have serving bowls and
platters in cobalt blue glass. None of this is fancy stuff--it's the
kind that's carried at Cost Plus. I have three smooth serving bowls,
two plain cobalt platters, and one "pebbled" cobalt platter. Very
simple, and the bold blue glass is a beautiful contrast with the matte
black. I might eventually buy some additional cobalt dishes--I like the
idea of a "formal" set table with a matte black soup bowl sitting on a
cobalt salad plate sitting on a matte black dinner plate. Mmmmmmm.

My drinking glasses are smoothly curved cobalt glass tumblers--nothing
fancy, the ones made by Libbey that you can find at Cost Plus. I looked
and looked and looked and *looked* for glasses, for more than a year,
and they were always either not a deep enough blue, or were too strongly
patterned. Finally, one day Jon happened to be in Cost Plus after work,
and he came home and said, "Hey, they have these really neat blue
glasses there and they're on sale, why don't you take a look?" So I
did--and they were just what I wanted, and further, with the sale, they
were $2 apiece. Perfect.

Libbey makes other stuff in this same line/color, with equally smooth,
curved shapes, that I also want to get: water goblets, wine glasses,
champagne flutes, coffee mugs, and (I discovered today) martini glasses.
(Had a hard time not buying the martini glasses this morning.) I keep
asking for them for Xmas, but Jon thinks that's a silly gift so I'm
probably going to have to get them myself, over time. (Of course, this
is a man who just completed his own glassware collection with a dozen
glasses from the Safe House in Milwaukee; apparently promo barware from
a spy-themed tavern isn't silly.)

The poll didn't ask about flatware, but my flatware is nifty: flat,
heavy, super-smooth shiny stainless with a *very* Deco look. It's Reed
& Barton. I am *really* fussy about flatware; I hate stuff that is too
short or long or cheap-feeling, and it has to have a certain weight and
balance in my hand (plus, I dislike forks with too-long tines). I found
this stuff on sale at Bed Bath & Beyond; I'd actually been after
something else there, but they were sold out of it, and right next to it
was this stuff.

The whole matte black/cobalt/shiny theme has been carrying over into the
rest of the kitchen. I have cobalt and chrome storage canisters; chrome
wire baskets and storage racks (still got a few of those to replace) and
a chrome dish drainer; lots of stainless mixing and storage bowls; and
kitchen tools that are either matte black, shiny stainless, or a
combination of the two (OXO makes really nice black&stainless kitchen
tools with a Deco influence). The kitchen is decorated with cobalt art
glass bottles; I even bought cobalt Pyrex custard cups before our last
party, so that the dip bowls would go with the theme. :) I'm working
on replacing all the glass bakeware with the cobalt version; and I'm
reaching a point where I want some really good cookware and will
probably go with stainless.

I moved into my first apartement, and was so excited to finally get to pick out
my dinnerware! Were not done yet, but currently we have
-set of purple glass plates
-4 purple glass tumblers and 4 wineglasses
-purple plastic cereal bowls from pier one
-oneida silverware-very think, coming to a point on the end
-all of the mugs in the disneys "villians" line

Im hoping to add a set of matte black dishes and bowls, but we dont have a
dishwasher and Im hoping fewer dishes means we wont leave dishes lying around

I have a strange assortment of dishes. It started with the Blue Velvet
pattern (I think -- it's a pattern of blue roses) Corelle dishes when I
moved from the dorms to My First Real Apartment. I also got a set of
flatware for four. It has blue plastic handles. Sadly, I've noticed the
"silver" starting to flake off!

Then I obtained a large blue and white pasta serving bowl and a bunch (8?
10?) of matching bowls. I also have 2 white bowls with a blue stripe on the
rim from my dormitory days.

Somewhere, I have a nicer set of flatware from my mother. I think it's
still in a box from the last move.

My mother also found me a set of 8 glasses with a gold "B" on them at a
garage sale. I am now down to 6. :(

There are other random pieces, but you get the idea. Someday, I plan to
have matching dishes and glasses and flatware. Of course, I also plan to
have more cabinet space. :)

When I got married the first time in 1990, these were the dishes I had
on my registry.
A place setting was so inexpensive (compared to bone china) that I got
14 place settings. I also have all the serving pieces (larger bowls,
platter, butter dish, salt & pepper, sugar & creamer, and teapot.
I wanted these so I could use them with any colour kitchen or dining
room that I maight have.
When I moved to England, I shipped it all here.
Of course, getting any replacement pieces is tricky-I have won a few
pieces off of ebay.

My cannisters/storage jars are also black or clear with cobalt blue
tops. I have the Corning "French White" in black.

I also have a large collection of cobalt blue glass.
My grandmother gave me her set of cobalt base Depression glass when I
was in college, and I have been collecting it since. I have large
cannisters, cookie jar, bowls, vases, candleholders, as well as
plates, platters and large serving bowls. A lot of all that came from
Crate and Barrel over the years, as well as barware.
>
As for other drinking items: I have various coffee mugs, almost all
are in blue or black (from the Pier) except for a set of Macintosh
design mugs from Glasgow and Art Nouveau ones from the V&A. Drinking
glasses are usually pint glasses bought as souvenirs or from pubs.

Sasaki also made glassware to go with the matte black set. I have a
few pieces of this. The bases are black with a blue glass ball.

>
>The poll didn't ask about flatware, but my flatware is nifty:

I had a set of Oneida which went AWOL in my US/UK move. I have a set
of 6 placesettings from Ikea with cobalt blue resin handles and a set
of 6 placesettings of flatware that looks like it is hand-hammered. I
also have a set of silver in a box from my grandmother.
>
Since moving to the UK and having a home of our own, I have been
slowly buying pieces of Portmeirion. I always wanted the Botanical
Garden pieces, and I now have a bunch of old cannisters, flowerpots,
vases and large serving bowls. I have discovered their other patterns
which are Birds of Britain and fish and have some of these items. John
likes the dinner plates since they are deep. I also have been getting
an old design of Poole called black pebble. It goes with my Sasaki
perfectly.

Bristol is known for its cobalt blue glass. I hope to get some of this
when our budget allows.

different variations on the theme. i'm always keeping an eye out for
good blue willow deals :) i do make sure they have all the blue willow
-elements- in the design, though. i love the way it looks mismatched
but all goes at the same time. i just have to be carefull with size.
most new plates made today are big enough to act as chargers under the
older plates! i also like to use cobalt blue glass for accent pieces,
too :)
